{"id":354804,"date":"2017-09-19T19:20:05","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T19:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=354804"},"modified":"2017-11-10T11:18:22","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T11:18:22","slug":"vregion-dead-whale-washed-ashore-in-keta-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=354804","title":{"rendered":"V\/Region: Dead whale washed ashore in Keta [Photos]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/08\/19\/dead-whale-found-at-atuabo\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>dead whale<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has been washed ashore on the Tettekope beach at Keta in the Volta Region.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Scores of residents around the area thronged the coastline to catch a glimpse of a whale which was discovered dead on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-354815\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Dead-whale-2.jpeg\" alt=\"dead-whale-2\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/08\/22\/more-whales-to-die-epa-warns\/\"><strong>lifeless marine mammal<\/strong><\/a><\/span> was noticed in the early hours of the day. A Wildlife Officer in the Keta Municipality, Abdul Karim Fuseini, said the whale was about 39 feet long and 16 feet in height. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The residents who were amazed at the sight of the dead whale, employed various means to draw much closer to catch a glimpse of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-354813\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Dead-whale-4.jpeg\" alt=\"dead-whale-4\" width=\"480\" height=\"359\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Some of them who spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> said the phenomenon is the first in several decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">It is unclear what might have led to the death of the whale, but a Chief fisherman in the locality, Seth Kedey, said the mammal could have been hit by a large vessel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Although whales are e<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">ndangered species, they play an important role in the ocean&#8217;s ecosystem by regulating the food chain and ensuring that all aquatic animals enjoy a fair share of their staple foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-354812\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Dead-whale-3.jpeg\" alt=\"dead-whale-3\" width=\"480\" height=\"359\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Mr. Abdul Karim has however advised residents not to eat the animal since the cause of death is unclear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Between 2013 and 2014, Ghana witnessed a number of incidents of dead whales washed ashore in various parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Some environmental groups described the development as a spillover effect of the country&#8217;s oil exploration.<\/p>\n<p>Friends of the Nation, an environmental NGO,\u00a0said the death recorded between 2013 and 2014, were &#8220;caused by interferences of ocean noise and vibrations from sonar and seismic exploration activities and collision with oil and gas infrastructure or even pollution in the marine environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: King Nobert Akpablie\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p>Photos by Jubilee Radio<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A dead whale has been washed ashore on the Tettekope beach at Keta in the Volta Region.
