{"id":34743,"date":"2014-07-26T11:42:04","date_gmt":"2014-07-26T11:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=34743"},"modified":"2014-07-26T11:42:23","modified_gmt":"2014-07-26T11:42:23","slug":"nigeria-placed-on-red-alert-over-ebola-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=34743","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria &#8216;placed on red alert&#8217; over Ebola death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">Nigeria says it has put all entries into the country on red alert after confirming the death of a Liberian man who was carrying the Ebola virus.<\/p>\n<p>The man died after arriving at Lagos airport on Tuesday, in the first Ebola case in Africa&#8217;s most populous country.<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance has been stepped up at all &#8220;airports, seaports and land borders&#8221;, says Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu.<\/p>\n<p>Since February, more than 660 people have died of Ebola in West Africa &#8211; the world&#8217;s deadliest outbreak to date.<\/p>\n<p>It began in southern Guinea and spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Contact avoided&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The Liberian man collapsed on arrival in Lagos last Sunday. He was taken from the airport to hospital, where he was put in quarantine.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have identified the 40-year-old man as an employee of the Liberian government.<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Members of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) wearing protective gear walk outside the isolation ward of the Donka Hospital, on 23 July 2014 in Conakry.\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/76539000\/jpg\/_76539472_023278497-1.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Ebola, which is highly contagious, spreads via bodily fluids, including sweat<\/div>\n<p>Mr Chukwu confirmed that the other passengers on board the flight had been traced and were being monitored.<\/p>\n<p>The patient had &#8220;avoided contact with the general public&#8221; between the airport and the hospital, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Health specialists have been deployed at all entry points into the country, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The virus, which kills up to 90% of those infected, spreads through contact with an infected person&#8217;s bodily fluids.<\/p>\n<p>Patients have a better chance of survival if they receive treatment early.<\/p>\n<p>The red alert in Nigeria comes as Sierra Leone launches a hunt for a woman infected with Ebola, who was forcibly removed from hospital by her relatives.<\/p>\n<p>The 32-year-old, who is the first registered Ebola case in the capital Freetown, was described by national radio as a &#8220;risk to all&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Health workers take blood samples for Ebola virus testing at a screening tent in the local government hospital in Kenema, Sierra Leone, on 30 June 2014.\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/76539000\/jpg\/_76539475_023009549-1.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/>West African states lack the resources to tackle the world&#8217;s worst outbreak of Ebola<\/div>\n<p>The Ebola cases in Sierra Leone are centred in the country&#8217;s eastern districts of Kenema and Kailahun, just over the border from the Guekedou region of Guinea where the outbreak started.<\/p>\n<p>Police said thousands of people joined a street protest in Kenema on Friday over the government&#8217;s handling of the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, it was announced that the doctor leading Sierra Leone&#8217;s fight against Ebola was being treated for the virus.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the World Health Organization said that 219 people had died of Ebola in Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria says it has put all entries into the country on red alert after confirming the death of a Liberian man who was carrying the Ebola virus.
