{"id":344442,"date":"2017-08-13T14:19:36","date_gmt":"2017-08-13T14:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=344442"},"modified":"2017-08-13T14:19:36","modified_gmt":"2017-08-13T14:19:36","slug":"weve-cleared-part-of-ghc1-2b-nhis-debt-akufo-addo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=344442","title":{"rendered":"We\u2019ve cleared part of GHc1.2b NHIS debt \u2013 Akufo-Addo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said his government has cleared GHc560 million out of GHc1.2 billion debt left by the previous administration in the health sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, government has, by dint of prudent management within the short space of seven months, cleared GH\u00a2560 million out of the GH\u00a21.2 billion of debt inherited,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, government is also putting measures in place to within 12 months clear the remaining amount owed healthcare providers who dispensed service to National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) beneficiaries.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-344445 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/akufo-addo-at-university-of-cape-coast-3.jpg\" alt=\"akufo-addo-at-university-of-cape-coast-3\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am told I can confidently say that we will settle all the arrears within the next 12 months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Akufo-Addo made this known on Saturday, 12<sup>th<\/sup> August, 2017, when he delivered a speech at the 50<sup>th<\/sup> congregation and 5<sup>th<\/sup> oath taking and induction ceremony of the School of Medical Sciences of the University of Cape Coast.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-344444 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/akufo-addo-at-university-of-cape-coast-2.jpg\" alt=\"akufo-addo-at-university-of-cape-coast-2\" width=\"674\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Akufo-Addo during the electioneering accused the Mahama government of collapsing the NHIS adding that he will revive it when given the mandate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-344446 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/akufo-addo-at-university-of-cape-coast-4.jpg\" alt=\"akufo-addo-at-university-of-cape-coast-4\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, we are up to date on the payment of claims to service providers. It is essential that the businesses of healthcare providers do not collapse,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t see rural postings as punishment\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Akufo-Addo also admonished the young doctors to accept postings in rural communities in the country saying they should not see it as a punishment.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana\u2019s doctor to patient ratio currently stands at one doctor to 8,000 patients a situation the president described as \u201cwoefully inadequate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur doctor patient ratio is even more lump sided when you get to the rural and deprived areas of our country. I do not put the all the blame on our medical doctors unwillingness to work in these communities. If we had good road networks and good schools are available around the country and not only in the urban centers, if we had electricity supply in all communities we will not have to be asked indeed insist that our young doctors take up postings in the rural communities.
