{"id":342751,"date":"2017-08-07T05:52:47","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T05:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=342751"},"modified":"2017-08-07T05:52:47","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T05:52:47","slug":"tunisia-fishermen-prevent-far-right-ship-from-docking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=342751","title":{"rendered":"Tunisia fishermen prevent far-right ship from docking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Tunisian fishermen have prevented a ship carrying European far-right activists from docking, dealing a blow to their mission to disrupt the flow of migrant boats from Africa to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The C-Star, chartered by French-based group G\u00e9n\u00e9ration identitaire (GI), was unable to berth in Zarzis.<\/p>\n<p>GI says non-governmental organisations active in the Mediterranean collude with people traffickers.<\/p>\n<p>But the Zarzis fishermen said the anti-migrant activists were racists.<\/p>\n<p>They vowed not to let the C-Star refuel if it landed and the vessel is now expected to try another Tunisian port on Monday.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/53AF\/production\/_97232412_31ede3f7-746e-4d9f-a990-73a45cc17c40.jpg\" alt=\"A banner that reads, \" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is the least we can do given what is happening out in the Mediterranean,&#8221; Chamseddine Bourassine, head of the local fishermen&#8217;s organisation, told AFP news agency. &#8220;Muslims and Africans are dying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A port official who asked to remain anonymous said: &#8220;Us let in racists here? Never.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/14D4B\/production\/_97232358_tunisia_zarzis.png\" alt=\"Map of Tunisia highlighting Zarzis and Tunis\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile humanitarian groups say any attempt to turn migrant boats back to Libya could be very dangerous and illegal under international law.<\/p>\n<p>About 600,000 migrants have been rescued from traffickers&#8217; boats and taken to Italy since the beginning of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>More than 10,000 people have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month rights group Amnesty International\u00a0accused\u00a0the EU of mostly leaving it up to sea rescue charities to save migrants.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, NGOs have come under criticism from the Italian authorities, who have threatened to stop vessels of other countries from bringing migrants to Italian ports.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s parliament has approved\u00a0a plan to send naval boats to Libya as part of its efforts to stop migrants crossing the Mediterranean, and is asking NGO rescue ships to abide by a code of conduct.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tunisian fishermen have prevented a ship carrying European far-right activists from docking, dealing a blow to their mission to disrupt the flow of migrant boats from Africa to Europe.
