President Nana Addo has admitted his government’s efforts at ensuring gender parity has been quite poor.<\/p>\n
The President made this admission while responding to a question on specific decisions he had taken to merit the African Union (AU) Gender Champion title recently conferred on him.<\/p>\n
He received the award from United National E<\/strong><\/a><\/span>conomic Commission for Africa (UNECA) a few weeks ago at the opening ceremony of the 29th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Afric, which \u00a0took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.<\/p>\n But some critics who believe the President has not done much to show his commitment to gender parity have questioned the move.<\/p>\n The President, in a rebuttal to these concerns indicated that his government will do more to ensure that are equal opportunities for women.<\/p>\n “…This is an area I want to do better. I have not been able to reach the 30% bench mark for appointment of women in my government. Chief of Staff is a woman, Secretary of the Cabinet is a woman and there are others as well but nevertheless I think that much more work has to be done my me. Hopefully the award was meant to inspire me to work better and stronger in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n Akufo-Addo appointed 36 women as MMDCEs, 9 ministers<\/strong><\/p>\n President Akufo-Addo after taking office on January 7, 2017 appointed 36 women for the position of Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives.<\/p>\n He also appointed nine women for ministerial roles.<\/p>\n Akufo-Addo\u2019s Chief of Staff as well as the newly appointed Chief Justice of Ghana are all women.<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n By: Marian Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana
