{"id":336671,"date":"2017-07-15T12:48:34","date_gmt":"2017-07-15T12:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=336671"},"modified":"2017-07-15T12:48:34","modified_gmt":"2017-07-15T12:48:34","slug":"china-to-open-first-overseas-military-base-in-djibouti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=336671","title":{"rendered":"China to open first overseas military base in Djibouti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ships carrying personnel for China&#8217;s first overseas military base have set sail to begin setting up the facility in\u00a0Djibouti, as the country&#8217;s rapidly modernising military extends its global reach.<\/p>\n<p>The warships departed from Zhanjiang in southern\u00a0China\u00a0to set up a &#8220;support base&#8221; in the Horn of Africa nation, state media reported late on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s agreement with Djibouti ensures its military presence in the country up until 2026, with a contingent of up to 10,000 soldiers, according to international current affairs magazine The Diplomat.<\/p>\n<p>Djibouti&#8217;s position on the northwestern edge of the Indian Ocean has fuelled worry in\u00a0India\u00a0that it would become another of China&#8217;s &#8220;string of pearls&#8221; of military alliances and assets ringing India, including\u00a0Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>China began construction of a base in Djibouti last year. It will be used to resupply navy ships taking part in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions off the coasts of Yemen and Somalia, in particular.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-336673\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/China.jpg\" alt=\"china\" width=\"1000\" height=\"562\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It will be China&#8217;s first overseas naval base, though Beijing officially describes it as a logistics facility.<\/p>\n<p>State news agency Xinhua did not say when the base would begin operations.<\/p>\n<p>Xinhua said the establishment of the base was a decision made by the two countries after &#8220;friendly negotiations, and accords with the common interest of the people from both sides&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The base will ensure China&#8217;s performance of missions, such as escorting, peace-keeping and humanitarian aid in Africa and west Asia,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Landmark&#8217; achievement<\/h2>\n<p>Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily news briefing the base would enable China to make &#8220;new and greater contributions&#8221; to peace in\u00a0Africa\u00a0and the world and would benefit Djibouti&#8217;s economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Djibouti, which is about the size of Wales, is at the southern entrance to the Red Sea on the route to the\u00a0Suez Canal.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny, barren nation sandwiched between\u00a0Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia also hosts US, Japanese and French bases.<\/p>\n<p>The People&#8217;s Liberation Army Daily said in a front-page commentary that the facility was a landmark that would increase China&#8217;s ability to ensure global peace, especially because it had so many UN peacekeepers in Africa and was so involved in anti-piracy patrols.<\/p>\n<p>The state-run Global Times said in an editorial that there could be no mistake that this was in fact a military base.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Certainly this is the People&#8217;s Liberation Army&#8217;s first overseas base and we will base troops there. It&#8217;s not a commercial resupply point.
