{"id":334517,"date":"2017-07-06T19:06:15","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T19:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=334517"},"modified":"2017-07-06T19:06:15","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T19:06:15","slug":"govt-releases-gh%c2%a2600m-to-pay-road-contractors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=334517","title":{"rendered":"Gov&#8217;t releases GH\u00a2600m to pay road contractors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government has paid road contractors about GH\u00a2600 million for work done in various parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite an earlier comment by the<span style=\"color: #666699;\"> <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/07\/02\/road-fund-coffers-empty-deputy-minister\/\"><strong>Roads Ministry<\/strong><\/a><\/span> that the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government left an \u2018empty\u2019 <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/07\/05\/empty-road-fund-coffers-not-an-excuse-ndc-mp\/\"><strong>Road Fund<\/strong><\/a><\/span> coffers.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;BoROvK2oEKQWksaCC8z0paMpsyC4mnT8&#8243;]The Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako Attah told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> that the first payment was made in March and the second payment commenced last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He made the announcement while addressing the press after inspecting some roads in the Greater Accra region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[From] the little that we have in the Road Fund, contractors are being paid. We started as far back as March. Contractors were paid something in the region of GH\u00a2300 million. Last Friday, the Road Fund board approved about GH\u00a2300 million and disbursement is going on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the government is committed to using the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/07\/02\/road-fund-coffers-empty-deputy-minister\/\"><strong>Road Fund<\/strong><\/a> <\/span>to tackle the \u201cprecarious roads that we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Minister of Roads, Kwabena Owusu Aduom, last week revealed that, money in the country\u2019s Road Fund account was not enough and cannot cater for <strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/02\/part-of-cocoa-fund-to-fix-cocoa-roads-amoako-attah\/\">ongoing project<\/a>s<\/span><\/strong> in the country<\/p>\n<p>He told\u00a0<strong>Citi News<\/strong>\u00a0that the Ghana Road Fund was depleted such that, it will take some 10 years to pay for already awarded contracts.<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that the money available would be used to service loans contracted by the former government but reacting to the claims on\u00a0<strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>\u00a0on Tuesday, the former Deputy Minister said the \u201cexcuses\u201d of the new administration were \u201ctoo much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He argued that the new government must find ingenious ways of raising money to fund road projects as the former government did same despite the burden of paying back a loan the John Kufuor government had contracted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Jonas Nyabor\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government has paid road contractors about GH\u00a2600 million for work done in various parts of the country.
