{"id":334247,"date":"2017-07-05T17:14:12","date_gmt":"2017-07-05T17:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=334247"},"modified":"2017-07-05T17:14:12","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T17:14:12","slug":"mexican-mayor-marries-crocodile-in-bizarre-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=334247","title":{"rendered":"Mexican mayor marries crocodile in bizarre ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Mexican mayor has married a crocodile in a bizarre ceremony as part of an age-old tradition to &#8216;bring luck&#8217; to local fishermen.<\/p>\n<p>The female crocodile &#8211; known as &#8216;The Princess&#8217; &#8211; was baptised on Thursday then subsequently dressed in a custom-made wedding dress and had her jaws clamped shut for the big day on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-334257\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Marry-crocodile-2.jpg\" alt=\"marry-crocodile-2\" width=\"615\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She also wore a veil as she was paraded through streets, accompanied by band music.<\/p>\n<p>After the procession, the reptile was married to the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula Victor Aguilarand in the town hall.<\/p>\n<p>The the croc got hitched as part of a ritual which has been practised by the Chontal Indians since 1789.<\/p>\n<p>They believe the ceremony will bring good luck and prosperity to local fishermen along the Pacific coast of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca state.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.mirror.co.uk\/incoming\/article10729939.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/Victor-Aguilar-Mayor-of-San-Pedro-Huamelula-receives-a-female-reptile-during-a-traditional-ancestr.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to custom, the crocodile is regarded as a princess, and it&#8217;s believed she will bring peace and prosperity to their community.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i4.mirror.co.uk\/incoming\/article10729936.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/A-woman-holds-a-reptile-in-a-traditional-ancestral-wedding-ceremony-between-Victor-Aguilar-Mayor-of.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mr Aguilar said: &#8220;The marenos [referring to the local residents], call her &#8216;The Princess&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i3.mirror.co.uk\/incoming\/article10729937.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/A-female-reptile-is-pictured-in-a-traditional-ancestral-wedding-ceremony-between-Victor-Aguilar-May.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So the role that I play is to be the husband of the princess.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A wedding guest said afterwards: &#8220;The dance they do here is like an offer to God, to thank for the land, the harvest, the fish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Mirror UK<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Mexican mayor has married a crocodile in a bizarre ceremony as part of an age-old tradition to &#8216;bring luck&#8217; to local fishermen.
