{"id":331074,"date":"2017-06-24T08:59:01","date_gmt":"2017-06-24T08:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=331074"},"modified":"2017-06-24T08:59:01","modified_gmt":"2017-06-24T08:59:01","slug":"some-mps-want-reversal-or-retaliation-over-us-protocol-visa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=331074","title":{"rendered":"Some MPs want reversal or retaliation over US&#8217; protocol visa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some Members of Ghana\u2019s Parliament have not taken lightly the US Embassy\u2019s clarifications on visa allocations to government officials, including MPs and former Presidents visiting the US unofficially.<\/p>\n<p>The MP for\u00a0Tempane constituency and a Deputy Attorney General, Joseph Kpemka, has expressed fears this development could mar diplomatic relations between the Ghana and the US.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;vJmm5b7l9Iqch6aAan4JkQbyUYhGHdL8&#8243;]In an interview with <strong>Citi News,<\/strong>\u00a0he thus called on the US Embassy to reverse the move with immediate effect.<\/p>\n<p>Clarifying US Embassy\u2019s law to members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament on Thursday, the US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson, indicated that for the applications of visas for travels on unofficial\u00a0business, officials will be required to apply in person, even with former Presidents.<\/p>\n<p>Before, such visa applications for unofficial business were done through a parliamentary\u00a0protocol officer or the like.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Kpemka said, \u201cwhen I read it the first time, I thought it was a slip and I wished it was not true because, in my candid opinion, we haven\u2019t done anything to warrant such a situation&#8230; It will be unfortunate for people who are all entitled to diplomatic courtesies to be made to go through the same processes and procedures as other persons because that hasn\u2019t happened before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-302077\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Joseph-Kpemka-1-e1498245905707.jpg\" alt=\"joseph-kpemka\" width=\"600\" height=\"411\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He further suggested that \u201cperhaps there are some underpinnings\u201d that led to the move, adding that he could not fathom how former presidents \u201cin attempting to go to the United States of America should apply through the same means and procedure as other people as former presidents. With the greatest respect, I find that unconscionable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the Deputy Attorney General said a reversal of the decision\u00a0would be &#8220;in the supreme interest of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ghana should reciprocate\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Member of Parliament for Suhum, Frederick Opare-Addo, was, however, more confrontational in his reaction to the US&#8217; explanation, as he called for some retaliation from the Ghana government if the US goes ahead to implement its decision.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with <strong>Citi News&#8217;<\/strong>, Sixtus Dong Ullo, the former Deputy Communications Minister, was adamant former presidents\u00a0could not be expected to go queue at the American embassy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_331077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-331077\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-331077\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/ixdvd_fredrick_opare_ansah-e1498246130172.jpg\" alt=\"Frederick Opare-Addo\" width=\"599\" height=\"486\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-331077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frederick Opare-Addo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He expressed some hope that &#8220;state protocol will still be able to process those documents for them [former presidents] and obtain the visas for them if they are not on official visits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But if things do not go as expected, Mr. Opare-Addo said there would be the &#8220;need for Ghana to reciprocate; not just Ghana, but other countries as well. It is high time that we\u00a0begin to treat other countries the same way they treat our officials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inusah in favour<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Minority Spokesperson on Constitutional, Parliamentary and Legal Affairs, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, stated his support saying, if a former\u00a0president was going on personal travels, he had to appear before the Embassy staff.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_302809\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302809\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-302809\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Inusah-Fuseini-2.jpg\" alt=\"Alhaji Inusah Fuseini\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-302809\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alhaji Inusah Fuseini<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike several others who have condemned this, the Tamale Central MP believes there\u2019s\u00a0nothing wrong with the decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is nothing wrong with this and it is not a slap in our face.
