{"id":327711,"date":"2017-06-12T13:56:52","date_gmt":"2017-06-12T13:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=327711"},"modified":"2017-06-12T13:56:52","modified_gmt":"2017-06-12T13:56:52","slug":"justice-sophia-akuffo-to-be-vetted-on-june-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=327711","title":{"rendered":"Justice Sophia Akuffo to be vetted on June 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Appointments Committee of Parliament has set next Monday, the 19<sup>th<\/sup> of June 2017, to vet the President\u2019s nominee for the position of Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo.<\/p>\n<p>The President<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/05\/12\/sophia-akuffo-is-ghanas-new-chief-justice\/\">\u00a0named Justice Sophia Akuffo\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>last month, following the retirement of former Chief Justice, Georgina Wood.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;i6Z4Fsbd7fueSP79zM2efxWYJqm5A2jf&#8221;]Currently, Justice William Atuguba is the acting Chief Justice. The approval process of Parliament is in line with Article 144 of the 1992 constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the date to <strong>Citi News\u2019<\/strong> Duke Mensah Opoku, Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, also added that the vetting of Irene Naa Toshie Addo as District Assembly Common Fund Administrator is scheduled for 20<sup>th<\/sup> June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are changing our modalities a little bit, but we have proposed the 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> June. Unless there are some changes, it is going to be 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> of June. We have decided that we will take CVs, and then five days after we have taken CVs, we begin working so if we said 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> and say for example the CV of the Chief Justice comes on the 17<sup>th ,\u00a0<\/sup>we&#8217;ll give ourselves five days , so if anyone delays CVs then he or she will be delaying the vetting,&#8221; Mr.\u00a0 Mubarak explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the CJ nominee\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sophia Akuffo had her Masters in Law (LLM) from the Havard University in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>She has been a member of the Governing Committee of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute and the Chairperson of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Task Force.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2006, she was elected one of the first judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights initially elected for two years, she was subsequently re-elected until 2014 and is at present serving as Vice-President\u00a0of the Court.<\/p>\n<p>She has written The Application of Information &amp; Communication Technology in the Judicial Process \u2013 the\u00a0Ghanaian Experience, a presentation to the African Judicial Network\u00a0Ghana\u00a0(2002).
