{"id":326051,"date":"2017-06-07T06:35:51","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T06:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=326051"},"modified":"2017-06-07T06:35:51","modified_gmt":"2017-06-07T06:35:51","slug":"allow-stranded-bunkpurugu-bece-candidates-to-resit-soon-activist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=326051","title":{"rendered":"Allow &#8216;stranded&#8217; Bunkpurugu BECE candidates to resit soon &#8211; Activist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A child&#8217;s rights activist, Bright Appiah, has called on the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to be flexible enough to allow the Basic\u00a0Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in Bunkpurugu, who were not able to sit for their first two papers, to do so at a more immediate time.<\/p>\n<p>The activist argued to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> that &#8220;in all matters, the law provides that we look for the best interest of children\u2026 WAEC is no exception to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;T5CqOjojk0qiv82RwiW1DqnxFQ66MrDI&#8221;]Over 200 BECE candidates from two communities in the District were unable to sit for the English and Religious and Moral Education papers taken on Monday, due to a change in their examination centres.<\/p>\n<p>But WAEC has indicated that such candidates would\u00a0have to defer and <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/06\/06\/stranded-bunkpurugu-bece-candidates-can-resit-in-feb-2018-waec\/\">re-sit these papers<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in February 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Mr. Appiah believes these unforeseen circumstances should not deprive any candidate of their rights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once you are\u00a0bringing services to children and once the state has declared something to be free and compulsory to children then nothing else should inhibit the process in terms of how children will access it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is nowhere in the law that children should write the exams within a week. There are rules and regulations that state how examinations need to be conducted\u00a0and since this is an issue which is not their doing, I think that WAEC should be flexible enough to give these children the opportunity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Issue can&#8217;t be addressed immediately &#8211; GES\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/06\/06\/stranded-bunkpurugu-bece-candidates-can-resit-in-feb-2018-waec\/\">WAEC <\/a><\/strong><\/span>has noted that, the conduct of standardized\u00a0examinations and\u00a0its accompanying complexities prevent it from rescheduling an immediate\u00a0sitting for the two papers and the GES Public Relations Officer, Rev. Jonathan Bettey toed a similar line.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Citi News,\u00a0<\/strong>Rev.\u00a0Bettey said &#8220;that opportunity may be given to them to write but not during this time that they are writing.
