{"id":32456,"date":"2014-07-17T07:40:21","date_gmt":"2014-07-17T07:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=32456"},"modified":"2014-07-17T17:07:38","modified_gmt":"2014-07-17T17:07:38","slug":"do-not-ban-chicken-imports-netherlands-warns-ghana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=32456","title":{"rendered":"Do not ban chicken imports; Netherlands warns Ghana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<em> <\/em>Managing Director of the Ghana Netherlands Chamber of Commerce\u00a0Nico van\u00a0Staalduinen has cautioned Ghana not to consider banning the importation of chicken.<\/p>\n<p>There have been calls for government to ban the importation of poultry products to save the local industry as well as reduce imports to shore up the cedi which has seen massive depreciation this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/farm-chicken-412.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16624\" alt=\"farm-chicken-412\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/farm-chicken-412.jpg\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/farm-chicken-412.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/farm-chicken-412-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/farm-chicken-412-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/a>Government has asserted it may heed to the calls to ban poultry imports if only local farmers, demonstrate, the capacity to produce, to satisfy the domestic market.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana spends about US$600million annually on rice and poultry imports.<\/p>\n<p>MD of the Ghana Netherlands Chamber of Commerc<em>e<\/em>\u00a0warns the country may shoot itself in the foot if it goes ahead with the move.<\/p>\n<p>He believes Ghana\u2019s land is not \u2018suitable for rearing chicken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I used to work in the poultry industry for more than 20 years and I am warning Ghana, Ghana is not an ideal country for the production of Chicken. Don\u2019t jump to whatever you see. Look at what Ghana\u2019s strong points are, export that, develop cassava, goats, and maize, and develop rice that belongs here. But stay away from risky business chicken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the beginning of the 2000s, Papaye took over and begun the official chicken and rice business. In 2014 we realize rice has replaced kenkey and Fufu to become our national food.
