{"id":322022,"date":"2017-05-24T06:39:49","date_gmt":"2017-05-24T06:39:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=322022"},"modified":"2017-05-24T06:39:49","modified_gmt":"2017-05-24T06:39:49","slug":"samsung-s8-eye-security-fooled-by-photo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=322022","title":{"rendered":"Samsung S8 &#8216;eye security&#8217; fooled by photo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Samsung&#8217;s eye-scanning security technology, used on the new Galaxy S8 smartphone, has been fooled with a photograph and a contact lens.<\/p>\n<p>The iris-scanner can be used to unlock the phone simply by looking at it, which Samsung says provides &#8220;airtight security&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But researchers at Chaos Computer Club had easily tricked the device with a picture of an eye, Motherboard said.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung told the BBC it was &#8220;aware of the issue&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers first set up the phone&#8217;s security by registering a volunteer&#8217;s eyes using the S8 iris scanner.<\/p>\n<p>They then took a photograph of one of the volunteer&#8217;s eyes, using a digital camera with an infra-red night vision setting.<\/p>\n<p>After printing the image, the researchers placed a contact lens over the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The team posted a video showing the S8 smartphone unlocking itself when it saw the false eye.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/156F5\/production\/_96179778_2ebedfbf-8709-4147-8aa2-164e57c82bc5.jpg\" alt=\"Smartphone\" width=\"976\" height=\"449\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>The phone unlocked when it saw the fake eye<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Samsung said its iris-scanning technology had been through &#8220;rigorous testing&#8221; to &#8220;prevent attempts to compromise its security&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If there is a potential vulnerability or the advent of a new method that challenges our efforts to ensure security at any time, we will respond as quickly as possible to resolve the issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Security expert Ken Munro said the discovery was &#8220;another reminder that biometrics is not a silver bullet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Personally, I prefer fingerprints to iris unlock. Your fingers are already holding your phone, so why not use prints rather than wave your phone in front of your face?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you want to be really secure, choose fingerprints and a secret number.
