{"id":3218,"date":"2014-03-02T14:05:29","date_gmt":"2014-03-02T14:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=3218"},"modified":"2014-03-02T14:05:29","modified_gmt":"2014-03-02T14:05:29","slug":"lupita-nyongo-wins-independent-spirit-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=3218","title":{"rendered":"Lupita Nyong&#8217;o wins Independent Spirit Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3219\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/73309535_reuters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3219\" alt=\"Lupita Nyong'o and Steve McQueen both won awards for 12 Years a Slave\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/73309535_reuters-300x192.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/73309535_reuters-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/73309535_reuters.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupita Nyong&#8217;o and Steve McQueen both won awards for 12 Years a Slave<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"story_continues_1\">Rising star Lupita Nyong&#8217;o won an Independent Spirit award on Saturday for her debut movie role in 12 Years a Slave and told the audience: &#8220;Not a bad way to celebrate my birthday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Kenyan actress turned 31 a day before the Oscars where she is a front runner for best supporting actress.<\/p>\n<p>12 Years a Slave dominated the Independent Spirit Awards, where it took five prizes.<\/p>\n<p>They included best feature and best director for Britain&#8217;s Steve McQueen.<\/p>\n<p>Other acting trophies went to Cate Blanchett, for her role in Blue Jasmine, and to Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, for their roles as Aids patients in Dallas Buyers Club.<\/p>\n<p>All three are favourites to win at the Oscars on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stormy weather<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The annual Independent Spirit Awards, which honour low budget film-making, take place in a giant tent on Santa Monica beach.<\/p>\n<p>This year the ceremony was accompanied by strong winds and bursts of heavy rain beating down on the tent.<\/p>\n<p>12 Years a Slave also won awards for screenplay and cinematography.<\/p>\n<p>Screenwriter John Ridley told the BBC after his win he didn&#8217;t realise how affecting the story was until he experienced it on the big screen with an audience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had no idea until I saw it in a room with 250 people and felt what they felt at that moment,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Picking up the best director award, McQueen dedicated it to the film&#8217;s subject Solomon Northup who &#8220;inspired me to look and find the truth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Brad Pitt, who co-produced and starred in the film, said backstage: &#8220;I thank Mr McQueen for bringing us all together to tell Solomon&#8217;s story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;It&#8217;s interesting that it took a Brit to ask the questions why more films hadn&#8217;t been made in America on our history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fruitvale Station was named best first feature while Nebraska won a best first screenplay award.<\/p>\n<p>Its writer Bob Nelson, 57, joked that it was the &#8220;fulfilment of boyhood dream to be oldest recipient of a first time screenplay award&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said Nebraska&#8217;s veteran lead actor Bruce Dern &#8220;took a role based on my old dad and made him live again&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary prize went to 20 Feet From Stardom, which shines a spotlight on the world of the backing singers.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"heading-1\">Full list of winners<\/h2>\n<p>Best Feature: 12 Years a Slave<\/p>\n<p>Best Director: Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave<\/p>\n<p>Best Screenplay: John Ridley, 12 Years a Slave<\/p>\n<p>Best First Feature: Fruitvale Station<\/p>\n<p>Best First Screenplay: Bob Nelson, Nebraska<\/p>\n<p>John Cassavetes Award (For best feature made under $500,000): This is Martin Bonner<\/p>\n<p>Best Supporting Female: Lupita Nyong&#8217;o, 12 Years a Slave<\/p>\n<p>Best Supporting Male: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club<\/p>\n<p>Best Female Lead: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine<\/p>\n<p>Best Male Lead: Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club<\/p>\n<p>Robert Altman Award: Mud<\/p>\n<p>Best Cinematography: Sean Bobbitt, 12 Years a Slave<\/p>\n<p>Best Editing: Nat Sanders, Short Term 1<\/p>\n<p>Best International Film: Blue is the Warmest Colour<\/p>\n<p>Best Documentary: 20 Feet From Stardom<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rising star Lupita Nyong&#8217;o won an Independent Spirit award on Saturday for her debut movie role in 12 Years a Slave and told the audience: &#8220;Not a bad way to celebrate my birthday.&#8221;
