A\u00a0<\/span>Harvard student has\u00a0become the first in the university’s history to submit a\u00a0rap album for\u00a0his senior thesis.<\/p>\n

Student Obasi Shaw, who will graduate from the prestigious university next week,\u00a0produced his album Liminal Minds\u00a0while other classmates wrote novels, poems, and short stories.<\/p>\n

The 10-track album is the first to be submitted as a senior thesis at the university, and weaves inspiration from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales<\/em>\u00a0with the current race issues.<\/p>\n

Mr Shaw was awarded a\u00a0summa cum laude minus\u00a0<\/em>mark for his album – the second highest grade a student can receive in the department.<\/p>\n

“[African-Americans are] free, but the effects of slavery still exist,” Mr Shaw told the Harvard Gazette<\/em>. “Each song is an exploration of that state between slavery and freedom.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

T<\/span>he Atlanta-born student was taught at home by both of his Harvard graduate parents, and credits his mother\u00a0with the idea of creating a rap thesis.<\/p>\n

Mr Shaw grew up listening to Christian rap, and started to listen to more well-known rappers such as Kendrick Lemar and Chance the Rapper only two years ago.<\/p>\n

He was inspired by\u00a0the rappers’ treatment of race, black identity and religion.<\/p>\n

On one of his tracks, Open Your Eyes<\/em>, Mr Shaw raps: “Just watch the thrones, our people are known.\u00a0For making history of the impossible. From rap to White House, we unstoppable. Jumping Jim Crow to playing Oscar roles.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Mr Shaw said: “Some people don\u2019t consider rap a high art form, but poetry and rap are very similar.<\/p>\n

“Rhyming poems were very common in old English poetry.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

M<\/span>r Shaw’s thesis adviser, Josh Bell, was extremely impressed by his student’s ingenuity and told the Harvard Gazette<\/em>: “Shaw] is telling stories in each song from different points of view, and it\u2019s critical of American society and racial politics. But above all that, it\u2019s a fun and interesting album.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

M<\/span>r Shaw is not pursuing a career in music, and after graduating plans to intern for\u00a0at a software engineering firm in Seattle.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, he will continue rapping as a hobby.<\/p>\n

“Rap is a genre in which I can say everything I want to say,” he said.\u00a0“I\u2019ve been writing in different capacities, but I never felt that I found my art form until I started rapping.”<\/p>\n
