{"id":316224,"date":"2017-05-03T18:30:19","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T18:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=316224"},"modified":"2017-05-03T18:30:19","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T18:30:19","slug":"galamsey-has-stopped-tony-aubynn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=316224","title":{"rendered":"Galamsey has stopped \u2013 Tony Aubynn\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chief Executive of the Minerals Commission, Dr. Tony Aubynn, has said that illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/04\/galamsey-in-ghana-affecting-ivory-coast-frimpong-boateng\/\">\u2018galamsey\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/span> has stopped in the country following the intense media campaign and government action against the practice.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, there were clear indications that &#8216;<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/02\/16\/galamsey-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly\/\">galamseyers<\/a>&#8216;<\/strong><\/span> have suspended their operations and vacated their sites after government\u2019s intervention to halt the practice.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;dMmlToiBkNEICzYXz5SaROS94fkBvp9s&#8221;]Speaking in an interview on<strong> Eyewitness News&#8217; Pointblank <\/strong>segment, Dr. Tony Aubynn said an early assessment of developments after intensified efforts to fight the menace, showed that illegal small-scale mining had ceased in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the ultimatum was given weeks ago, we were all waiting to see what will happen, but at the end of it, when we went round to the places, we saw virtually no mining activity going on, almost total cessation. By and large, there was no mining, and what we also saw was that, a lot of excavators, a lot of them had been parked. For now, we have seen that it [galamsey] has stopped,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Government and stakeholders including the Minerals Commission, have been challenged to work to address the menace of illegal small-scale mining which has left severe consequences on the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/28\/ghana-may-soon-import-water-over-galamsey-epa\/\"><strong>environment.<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many communities in about 6 regions of the country are currently suffering the effects of\u00a0the menace. Most of Ghana\u2019s fresh water bodies have become poisonous with thousands of acres of fertile farmlands destroyed as a result of galamsey.<\/p>\n<p>Although Ghana\u2019s laws are clear on illegal mining, the activity has been allowed to continue for more than two decades. <strong>Citi FM\u00a0<\/strong>has been at the forefront of media advocacy and crusade for action against the illegal activity.<\/p>\n<p>The station among other things petitioned Parliament to act to stop the menace.
