{"id":31583,"date":"2014-07-14T10:15:08","date_gmt":"2014-07-14T10:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=31583"},"modified":"2014-07-14T07:52:29","modified_gmt":"2014-07-14T07:52:29","slug":"s-africas-tutu-backs-assisted-dying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=31583","title":{"rendered":"S Africa&#8217;s Tutu backs assisted dying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s Anglican Archbishop emeritus Desmond Tutu says he supports assisted dying for the terminally ill.<\/p>\n<p>Writing in Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Observer<\/em>\u00a0newspaper on Sunday,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2014\/jul\/12\/desmond-tutu-in-favour-of-assisted-dying\" target=\"_blank\">Tutu explained<\/a>\u00a0that he had been convinced the humans had the right to decide on their own fate, after a\u00a028-year-old terminally ill South African took his own life because doctors\u00a0were unable to end his life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some people opine that with good palliative care there is no need for assisted dying, no need for people to request to be legally given a lethal dose of medication,&#8221; Tutu, a Nobel Peace laureate, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was not the case for Craig Schonegevel [the 28-year-old South African]. Others assert their right to autonomy and consciousness &#8211; why exit in the fog of sedation when there&#8217;s the alternative of being alert and truly present with loved ones?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tutu&#8217;s comments come a day after the Anglican Church&#8217;s former leader backed a bill to legalise it in\u00a0Britain.<\/p>\n<p>George Carey, the former archbishop of Canterbury, said on Saturday he had changed his mind and would support a British bill to allow assisted suicide in certain cases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Changed my mind&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carey, 78, who now sits in the House of Lords [parliament&#8217;s upper chamber] after leaving office as the spiritual leader of the world&#8217;s Anglicans in 2002, told\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2689295\/Carey-Ive-changed-mind-right-die-On-eve-Lords-debate-ex-Archbishop-dramatically-backs-assisted-death-law.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Daily Mail<\/a>\u00a0that he had dropped his long-standing opposition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact is I&#8217;ve changed my mind,&#8221; he wrote in a piece for the British newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The old philosophical certainties have collapsed in the face of the reality of needless suffering,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Carey said he would support the bill, brought by Lord\u00a0Charles Falconer, which would allow mentally capable adults to request help to die if they were suffering from a terminal illness and had less than six months\u00a0to live<\/p>\n<p>But the Church remains officially opposed to the legislation and has called for a public inquiry into the issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The case of Mandela<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Writing in the<em>\u00a0Observer<\/em>, Tutu said that he had asked his family not to prolong his life artificially, and criticised the treatment of Nelson Mandela, South Africa&#8217;s anti-apartheid icon,\u00a0during his final days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What was done to Madiba was disgraceful,&#8221; he wrote.\u00a0&#8220;You could see that Madiba was not fully there. My friend was no longer himself. It was an affront to Madiba&#8217;s dignity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have been fortunate to spend my life working for dignity for the living. Now I wish to apply my mind to the issue of dignity for the dying,&#8221; Tutu wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is due to be debated in the House of Lords next week.<\/p>\n<p>On Tutu&#8217;s comments, Falconer told the\u00a0<em>Observer<\/em>\u00a0he was &#8220;really glad that someone of his stature is taking part in this important debate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I very much hope that it will indicate that religion is not a bar to supporting this bill,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Church of England on Sunday called for an Royal Commission &#8211; a major\u00a0public inquiry &#8211; to be held on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Aljazeera<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s Anglican Archbishop emeritus Desmond Tutu says he supports assisted dying for the terminally ill.
