{"id":315045,"date":"2017-04-30T05:52:37","date_gmt":"2017-04-30T05:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=315045"},"modified":"2017-04-30T05:52:37","modified_gmt":"2017-04-30T05:52:37","slug":"manchester-united-to-pay-tribute-to-nigerian-fans-killed-in-calabar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=315045","title":{"rendered":"Manchester United to pay tribute to Nigerian fans killed in Calabar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Manchester United has revealed plans to honour Nigerian football fans who died last week following an accident in the south-eastern city of Calabar.<\/p>\n<p>The tragedy, which claimed the lives of at least seven people, happened when an electric cable fell on fans watching a Manchester United match on TV.<\/p>\n<p>The English club tweeted that its players will wear black armbands on Sunday in memory of the victims.<\/p>\n<p>English football has a large and passionate following in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The high-tension cable fell on a crowded shack which was showing the Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht.<\/p>\n<p>One witnesses said the building had a zinc roof which conducted the electricity to those watching inside.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/0C33\/production\/_95832130_screencapturemanu.png\" alt=\"A screenshot of a tweet by Man United\" width=\"976\" height=\"370\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><span class=\"story-image-copyright\">TWITTER<\/span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to the dead, at least 30 people were rushed to hospital by local ambulances.<\/p>\n<p>Some eyewitnesses said the number of people who died was higher than the official toll of seven.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear what caused the electric cable to collapse.
