{"id":307658,"date":"2017-04-03T16:26:14","date_gmt":"2017-04-03T16:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=307658"},"modified":"2017-04-03T16:26:14","modified_gmt":"2017-04-03T16:26:14","slug":"st-petersburg-metro-explosion-kills-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=307658","title":{"rendered":"St Petersburg metro explosion kills 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Ten people have been killed in an explosion between two underground stations in St Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p>The head of Russia&#8217;s National Anti-Terrorist Committee said the blast hit a train between Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut stations.<\/p>\n<p>The committee said an explosive device was later found and made safe at another station nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in a Facebook post that the explosion was &#8220;terrorist attack&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>An anti-terror investigation has been opened, but other possible causes are being investigated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>What happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/E776\/production\/_95445295_mediaitem95445294.jpg\" alt=\"A picture shows the damaged train carriage at Technological Institute metro station in Saint Petersburg on April 3, 2017\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><span class=\"story-image-copyright\">AFP\/GETTY IMAGES<\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">The badly-damaged train came to a stop at the Tekhnologichesky Institut station<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first images posted on social media showed a train at a platform in Tekhnologichesky Institut station with a hole blown in its side, along with a number of casualties.<\/p>\n<p>Initial reports suggested there had been two explosions, one each at Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut stations.<\/p>\n<p>But the Russian National Anti-Terrorist Committee later confirmed there had been only one explosion between the two stations, at about 14:30 local time (11:30 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>Senior investigator Svetlana Petrenko told Russian media the train driver&#8217;s decision to continue to the next station almost certainly helped save lives, as it allowed people to be rescued quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The number of casualties given by officials has differed throughout the day. In the most recent update, Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said 10 people had died &#8211; seven at the scene, one in an ambulance and two in hospital &#8211; and that 37 people were hurt.<\/p>\n<p>The entire St Petersburg underground network has now been shut down, and metro officials in the capital Moscow said they were introducing extra security measures there as a result.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ten people have been killed in an explosion between two underground stations in St Petersburg.
