{"id":302225,"date":"2017-03-16T11:39:24","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T11:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=302225"},"modified":"2017-03-16T11:39:24","modified_gmt":"2017-03-16T11:39:24","slug":"ahmad-ahmad-defeats-issa-hayatou-in-caf-presidential-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=302225","title":{"rendered":"Ahmad Ahmad defeats Issa Hayatou in CAF presidential elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The president of the Madagascar Football Association, Ahmad Ahmad has defeated long-serving CAF President, Issa Hayatou in the just ended CAF elections held at the Africa Union Plenary Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>His victory ends Mr. Hayatou\u2019s 29-year reign as president of the Confederation of African Football.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_302248\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302248\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/03\/16\/ahmad-ahmad-defeats-issa-hayatou-in-caf-presidential-elections\/ahmad-ahmad-win\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-302248\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-302248\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Ahmad-Ahmad-win.jpg\" alt=\"Photo credit: Images Images\" width=\"720\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-302248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: Images Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ahmad Ahmad polled 34 votes, against Issa Hayatou\u2019s 20 votes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/03\/16\/ahmad-ahmad-defeats-issa-hayatou-in-caf-presidential-elections\/caf-elections\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-302242\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-302242\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CAF-elections.jpg\" alt=\"caf-elections\" width=\"705\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a>Issa Hayatou, who has been in office since 1988 was hoping to remain in office for his eighth term.<\/p>\n<p>The departure of Hayatou is a huge change for African football and the 70-year-old will also lose his Fifa position and his place on the ruling council of world football&#8217;s governing body.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad told BBC Sport after\u00a0his victory that: &#8220;I can&#8217;t talk at this time. Only one thing &#8211; I thank God, I thank my team&#8230; we worked hard but we won. That was the first step. The second step is to develop African football. Some days I thought I would win &#8211; today I didn&#8217;t (think I would win). When you try to do something, you mean that you can do it. If I can&#8217;t do it, I never stand.\u00a0This is sweet victory.
