{"id":298844,"date":"2017-03-04T06:03:11","date_gmt":"2017-03-04T06:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=298844"},"modified":"2017-03-04T06:03:11","modified_gmt":"2017-03-04T06:03:11","slug":"amazon-typo-knocked-websites-offline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=298844","title":{"rendered":"Amazon typo knocked websites offline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Amazon has said that a simple typo was the cause of several high-profile websites and services being knocked offline earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>Hours of problems struck services like Q&amp;A forum Quora, and Giphy, an image hosting service.<\/p>\n<p>The sites rely on hosting provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) &#8211; a cloud computing provider.<\/p>\n<p>A typo made during a routine debugging of the AWS billing system caused the failure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, one of the inputs to the command was entered incorrectly and a larger set of servers was removed than intended,&#8221; Amazon said in an online statement.<\/p>\n<p>The error required a full restart that &#8220;took longer than expected&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Around 150,000 websites and services rely on AWS.<\/p>\n<p>Among those affected by the failure was &#8211; somewhat ironically &#8211; Down Detector, a service that tracks downtime at major websites.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon, which is the world&#8217;s largest provider of cloud services, says it is now making changes to help prevent a similar incident occurring in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon has said that a simple typo was the cause of several high-profile websites and services being knocked offline earlier in the week.
