{"id":29391,"date":"2014-07-03T07:36:38","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T07:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=29391"},"modified":"2014-07-03T07:36:38","modified_gmt":"2014-07-03T07:36:38","slug":"c-section-linked-to-stillbirth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=29391","title":{"rendered":"C-section &#8216;linked to stillbirth&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">Women who have c-sections are 14% more likely to have a stillbirth in future than those giving birth naturally, say researchers.<\/p>\n<p>And c-sections raised the chance of an ectopic pregnancy by 9%, according to a study of more than 800,000 Danish first-time mothers.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Louise Kenny of University College Cork described the risks as &#8220;very low&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Performing 3,000 caesareans would lead to one extra stillbirth in a subsequent pregnancy, she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although these are rare outcomes, they are devastating for parents and healthcare providers,&#8221; Prof Kenny told BBC News.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story_continues_2\">&#8220;Therefore, we would advise women to avoid requesting a caesarean section when there is no medical indication to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr Patrick O&#8217;Brien of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said the findings were &#8220;reassuring&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s quite reassuring that any increased risk of stillbirth in a subsequent pregnancy is very small indeed,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any stillbirth is a stillbirth too many but the absolute risk is very small indeed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosmedicine.org\/\">PLOS Medicine<\/a>, is one of the largest so far to look at links between c-sections and stillbirth.<\/p>\n<p>The study analysed data from 832,996 women from Danish national registers.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 4,000 stillbirths every year in the UK and one in 200 pregnancies ends in stillbirth.<\/p>\n<p>An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women who have c-sections are 14% more likely to have a stillbirth in future than those giving birth naturally, say researchers.
