{"id":287900,"date":"2017-01-25T07:23:49","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T07:23:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=287900"},"modified":"2017-01-25T07:23:49","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T07:23:49","slug":"three-jailed-over-taiwan-atm-hack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=287900","title":{"rendered":"Three jailed over Taiwan ATM hack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Three Eastern European men have been jailed in Taiwan over the theft of $2.6m (\u00a32.1m) from cash machines around the country.<\/p>\n<p>They are part of a network of criminals who used malware to hack into 41 First Commercial Bank machines in three different cities in July last year.<\/p>\n<p>CCTV showed offenders walking away with bags of cash, though most of the money was recovered shortly afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Police in Thailand believe the case is linked to a similar theft there.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Public panic&#8217;<\/h4>\n<p>Latvian Andrejs Peregudovs, Mihail Colibaba from Romania and Niklae Penkov from Moldova were all convicted by a Taipei court of causing damage to the public by breaching computer security.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors had sought 12-year jail terms, saying the actions &#8220;seriously disrupted financial order and caused public panic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the heist, banks temporarily froze withdrawals from more than 1,000 cash machines.<\/p>\n<p>Another 19 suspects, including one French national and one Australian, are believed to have fled the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three Eastern European men have been jailed in Taiwan over the theft of $2.6m (\u00a32.1m) from cash machines around the country.
