{"id":281821,"date":"2017-01-05T12:14:49","date_gmt":"2017-01-05T12:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=281821"},"modified":"2017-01-05T12:14:49","modified_gmt":"2017-01-05T12:14:49","slug":"pay-us-or-we-lock-up-projects-disgruntled-contractors-to-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=281821","title":{"rendered":"Pay us or we lock up projects &#8211; Disgruntled contractors to Gov&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors in the Volta Region will be blocking access to roads and facilities they have constructed on January 6, if they are not paid monies owed them by government.<\/p>\n<p>The association at a press conference on Wednesday lamented that\u00a0all the projects their members undertook were pre-financed with funds from financial institutions, and the delay in payments coupled with the interest on loans could force them into liquidation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_281829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-281829\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/00cac807-d010-4413-be00-45402d43282a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-281829\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/00cac807-d010-4413-be00-45402d43282a.jpg\" alt=\"Emmanuel Afetorgbor\" width=\"600\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-281829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emmanuel Afetorgbor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking at the press conference, the Secretary of the association, Emmanuel Afetorgbor, noted that &#8220;the contractors who sacrificed their resources to execute these projects stand a chance of liquidation and loss of livelihood as a result of the inability of government to pay for these projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is important to note that, all these projects are pre-financed by contractors by whatever means, especially form banks and financial institutions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Afetorgbor cited the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) as the major defaulter in this regard, saying the Trust &#8220;owes contractors unpaid certificates spanning over six months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_281367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-281367\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/6184a87e-9ca1-4861-b983-df1d3f36b9d0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-281367\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/6184a87e-9ca1-4861-b983-df1d3f36b9d0.jpg\" alt=\"Contractors picketing at the Finance Ministry\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-281367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Contractors picketing at the Finance Ministry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The GETFund has already been at the centre of <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/01\/03\/unpaid-getfund-contractors-picket-at-finance-ministry\/\">some protests<\/a><\/strong><\/span> with some contractors working on its projects picketing at the Ministry of Finance to\u00a0demand monies owed them, to the tune of over GHc 300 million spanning a period of six months.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining their precarious situation, Mr. Afetorgbor said &#8220;most of these locally based contractors depend on funding from the banks and interest obviously accrues on the sums borrowed to the extent that the certificate values get consumed by the banks leaving the contractors nothing to pay their workers and their suppliers.
