Equal to:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ns_super_impact ns_header_right\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul class=\"ns_impact-figures ns_separator \">\n<li class=\"ns_impact\"><span class=\"ns_impact__fig\">ALL<\/span> of Ireland&#8217;s healthcare budget<\/li>\n<li class=\"ns_impact\"><span class=\"ns_impact__fig\">66%<\/span> of its social welfare bill<\/li>\n<li class=\"ns_impact\"><span class=\"ns_impact__fig\">15 million<\/span> iPhones<\/li>\n<li class=\"ns_impact\"><span class=\"ns_impact__fig\">27%<\/span> of Apple&#8217;s 2015 profit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"ns_footer ns_small-text\">Sources: Apple, HSE, Dept of Social Protection<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ns_outer_wrapper_img_src\">Getty<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ireland&#8217;s finance ministry said in a strongly-worded statement on Monday that the European Commission had &#8220;misunderstood the relevant facts and Irish law&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ireland did not give favourable tax treatment to Apple &#8211; the full amount of tax was paid in this case and no state aid was provided,&#8221; it said. &#8220;Ireland does not do deals with taxpayers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And Apple&#8217;s general counsel Bruce Sewell told Reuters that the commission had disregarded tax experts brought in by Irish authorities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Apple is not an outlier in any sense that matters to the law. Apple is a convenient target because it generates lots of headlines,&#8221; Mr Sewell said.<\/p>\n<p>Even if Apple lost its appeal. the record tax bill should not be a problem for iPhone maker which saw a net profit of $53bn in the 2015 financial year.<\/p>\n<p>Apple is not the only company that has been targeted for securing favourable tax deals in the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the commission told the Netherlands to recover as much as \u20ac30m (\u00a325.6m) from Starbucks, while Luxembourg was ordered to claw back a similar amount from Fiat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Apple plans to appeal this week against the European Commission&#8217;s rulingthat it pays up to \u20ac13bn (\u00a311bn) to Ireland in back taxes.
