{"id":27768,"date":"2014-06-26T11:17:52","date_gmt":"2014-06-26T11:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=27768"},"modified":"2014-06-26T20:57:28","modified_gmt":"2014-06-26T20:57:28","slug":"portugal-defeat-will-complete-ghanas-disgrace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=27768","title":{"rendered":"Portugal defeat will complete Ghana&#8217;s disgrace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is inconceivable that anything other than football can grip Brazilian <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"46eb13f3-63e9-49a7-8cad-bfa95351a28c\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"e40c06a4-3ee7-42b7-ad1f-034e5876cd7d\">primetime<\/span><\/span> TV in this period, but on Wednesday night, something African did.<\/p>\n<p>After days of agitation, Ghana&#8217;s bonus row has ended with the delivery of $3 million &#8211; in cash.<\/p>\n<p>The Black Stars rebelled against the team&#8217;s managers on Tuesday at the team camp base in Maceio and almost refused to make that day&#8217;s trip to Brasilia, where they play Portugal on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>That demonstration of unhappiness was quickly addressed by the country&#8217;s head of state, John Mahama, who promised the team of the impending arrival of the money.<\/p>\n<p>In a move which has garnered worldwide attention, a chartered jet flew three million dollars ($3m) in cash in one hundred dollar bills to Brasilia on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s media have reacted <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"24e529ce-a32a-4855-adbc-3a5f135f404a\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"2d2af60b-0daf-4bcf-b5c1-82c955fd6859\">in<\/span><\/span> awe at the <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"2326ac41-4fd4-40ed-b95e-cdfa852f85dc\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"196bc428-0560-4b81-88cd-605be132864a\">running<\/span><\/span> episode. <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"59e088f8-4e8c-4baa-b633-0408bb559486\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"79206c9b-efb4-4e04-8a71-10141b73de52\">BBC&#8217;s radio report<\/span><\/span> called it &#8220;bizarre&#8221;; CNN could only manage &#8220;shocking&#8221;; ESPN went with &#8220;weird&#8221; and France 24 asserted that it was &#8220;incredible but true&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><b>Local coverage<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The incident caught fire in <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"004d5ac9-506b-4310-b89d-3b6341e7e5f6\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"708cb37c-b172-4fb7-9b8d-5ef1127d8c40\">Brazilian media<\/span><\/span>, whose top outlet &#8216;Globo&#8217; followed the landing of the money at the local airport, all the way to the team hotel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"3de8d9cf-b4bd-4edf-b01d-58b94c1bfd80\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"793c364b-083d-4278-b04b-63ec6e041047\">Globo<\/span><\/span>&#8216;, the television station that produces more soap operas than any in the world, found time to air this edition of Ghana&#8217;s brief soap opera. Later, the station splashed photos of the sequence on its website, accompanied by these dramatic details.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were 72 Policia Militar, 19 Municipal Guards, 26 Squadron Ground Force Militar, 14 members of the Grupamento <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"fea6a88b-4b35-4687-a04c-ff38bbc4f448\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"e20cd200-6b9a-4bb8-925b-1711d0663fa1\">de<\/span><\/span> Operacoes Especiais <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"5fb81439-dfc9-4ac2-a14d-781a452dbc51\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"e1aeeacf-7039-4979-adf8-586ba139befb\">de<\/span><\/span> Brasilia, One Aeronautical Policia (Air Force), two Highway Patrol Battalion groups and an Air Mobile Brasilia Group in the convoy transporting an estimated <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"6f681931-7e7b-4230-bd41-2a59a2c2047f\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"d4a672ce-a6a7-4b14-94af-43bf21337ca7\">amount $3.5<\/span><\/span> million, being monies owed to the Ghana World Cup team from the airport through the streets of Brasilia to the team hotel at 8:30pm local time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The station went further to show how the money was taken out of the Bombardier aircraft, and they managed to even get a snap of defender John Boye kissing his wad of cash after it was given to him, as if to say: &#8220;Yeah, baby!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Home reaction<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The movie-style scenes in the South American nation have, however, brought out feelings of disgust and bitterness toward the team back home in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>You would find a great many people covertly, or otherwise, hoping, for Ghana to be eliminated to save the nation further international ridicule.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"385f5539-032a-4e3d-abbd-d2c6c3076db7\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"a85d6817-16ab-4368-a157-03226a74fa30\">Kwami<\/span><\/span> Sefa-Kayi, host of one of Ghana&#8217;s most popular radio breakfast shows, expressed disbelief at the whole incident on Thursday morning, calling it &#8220;unbelievable stories that defy logic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Another statesman, Dr KB Asante, one of Ghana&#8217;s longest serving civil servants since the independence era described the episode as one that is as &#8220;humbling in its brazenness as it is crazy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The team themselves, in Brazil, know what damage they have inflicted on themselves. No one has been more worried than the coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery coach will not want to be in this situation where players are requesting money when you have such an important game to play,\u201d Kwesi Appiah said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the best for me. For the past two days I have had sleepless nights. I have not been able to close my eyes,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally you sort this out before a major tournament. You can\u2019t keep telling the players the money will come when I does not come. It is unfortunate I find myself in this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking is his Dutch-based winger, Christian Atsu, likely to get game time against Cristiano Ronaldo&#8217;s men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be bad if we lose because people will assume it is because of the money. Now we will play with everything to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Other worrying matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Ghana camp has also been dogged by controversy in the past week, after a UK-based newspaper accused the FA of intent to fix games in the near future, citing video evidence it has.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the coach confirmed that a widely <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\" id=\"32998ead-db99-4b2d-937d-19738f5db26b\">rumoured<\/span> exchange of words between himself and Kevin-Prince Boateng did occur.
