{"id":277197,"date":"2016-12-16T06:46:22","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T06:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=277197"},"modified":"2016-12-16T06:46:22","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T06:46:22","slug":"obama-vows-action-against-russia-over-election-hacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=277197","title":{"rendered":"Obama vows action against Russia over election hacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">US President Barack Obama has vowed to take action against Russia for its alleged interference in the US presidential election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to take action and we will,&#8221; he told US radio station NPR.<\/p>\n<p>Russia stands accused by the US of hacking the emails of the Democratic Party and a key Hillary Clinton aide, which the Kremlin strongly denies.<\/p>\n<p>Republican president-elect Donald Trump has also dismissed the claim as &#8220;ridiculous&#8221; and politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>The intelligence agencies say they have overwhelming evidence that Russian hackers linked to the Kremlin were behind the hacks.<\/p>\n<p>And on Thursday, a White House spokesman said President Vladimir Putin was involved in the cyber-attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later, Mr Obama said: &#8220;I think there&#8217;s no doubt that when any foreign government tries to impact on the integrity of our elections, that we need to take action and we will, at a time and a place of our own choosing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some of it may be explicit and publicised. Some of it may not be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr Putin is well aware of my feelings about this, because I spoke to him directly about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/6481\/production\/_92992752_hi035957637.jpg\" alt=\"John Podesta with Hillary Clinton\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><span class=\"story-image-copyright\">REUTERS<\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">John Podesta, who led the Clinton campaign, was hacked and his emails posted on Wikileaks<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It is not clear what action the US intends to take, with Mr Obama leaving office on 20 January.<\/p>\n<p>The disclosure of emails was embarrassing to the Democratic Party at a crucial point in the election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The CIA has concluded that Russia&#8217;s motivation was to sway the election in favour of Mr Trump, but no evidence has been made public.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump has accused the Democrats of fabricating Russian involvement to hide their embarrassment at the election defeat.<\/p>\n<p>He has also long expressed admiration for Mr Putin, and his pick for secretary of state &#8211; oil tycoon Rex Tillerson, who has worked closely with the Russian leader &#8211; has raised concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday: &#8220;If Russia, or some other entity, was hacking, why did the White House wait so long to act?
