{"id":270977,"date":"2016-11-23T11:47:24","date_gmt":"2016-11-23T11:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=270977"},"modified":"2016-11-23T11:47:24","modified_gmt":"2016-11-23T11:47:24","slug":"supreme-court-throws-out-ward-brews-case-against-ec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=270977","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court throws out Ward Brew&#8217;s case against EC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court has dismissed a suit filed by the flagbearer of the dormant Democratic People&#8217;s Party (DPP), Thomas Nuako Ward-Brew, who had prayed the apex court to order the Electoral Commission (EC) to postpone the December 7, 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n<p>According to the seven-member panel of justices, presided over by Sophia Adinyira, the suit by Mr. Brew lacked merit in both form and substance.<\/p>\n<p>They also stated that, his reason of being in Nigeria during the period which EC was directed to allow disqualified presidential candidates make corrections to their form was frivilous.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_216739\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-216739\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-216739\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/supreme-court-1.jpg\" alt=\"Supreme Court\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-216739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Supreme Court<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr. Ward Brew wanted the Court to ask the EC to allow him to effect the necessary correction on his nomination forms to enable him to contest the polls.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mr. Ward-Brew, the postponement would give disqualified presidential aspirants, including him, ample time to campaign.<\/p>\n<p>He further prayed the Supreme Court to extend the period of time for the submission of nomination forms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nduom, two others cleared to contest 2016 presidential elections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brew is among nine other presidential hopefuls who were disqualified for not meeting the EC&#8217;s requirements in the filling of nomination forms.<\/p>\n<p>He went to court after three of the \u00a0twelve, including the<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/11\/09\/nduom-two-others-cleared-to-contest-2016-presidential-elections\/\"> PPP&#8217;s Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, NDP&#8217;s Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, and the PNC&#8217;s Dr. Edward Mahama, were admitted back onto the ballot, bringing the number of contestants to seven.<\/p>\n<p>This was made possible by a Supreme Court ruling, after the EC had gone there to quash a High Court ruling that rejected\u00a0Dr.Nduom&#8217;s earlier disqualifcation, and asked the Commission to allow him\u00a0ample time to correct the errors on his forms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Fred Djabanor\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court has dismissed a suit filed by the flagbearer of the dormant Democratic People&#8217;s Party (DPP), Thomas Nuako Ward-Brew, who had prayed the apex court to order the Electoral Commission (EC) to postpone the December 7, 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.
