I&#8217;m tired of seeing a Ape in heels,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Local mayor Beverly Whaling responded with &#8220;just made my day Pam&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Whaling is mayor of the town of Clay, which has a population of just 491.<\/p>\n<p>It has no African American residents, according to the 2010 census. In Clay County as a whole, more than 98% of its 9,000 residents are white.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/104E\/production\/_92447140_wsaz2.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of the Facebook post, taken from WSAZ 3 news channel\" width=\"810\" height=\"410\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>The Facebook post was first spotted by local news channel WSAZ3<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Despite the small population in the region, the controversial Facebook post spread across United States and international media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>A petition calling for both women to be sacked has collected more than 85,000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post and <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/national\/w-v-mayor-friend-joke-michelle-obama-ape-heels-article-1.2873128\">New York Daily News reported<\/a> that Ms Taylor was removed from her position on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>She told <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wsaz.com\/content\/news\/Non-profit-director-and-mayor-under-fire-after-Facebook-post-cal-401049855.html\">local news outlet WSAZ, which first carried the story<\/a>, that she acknowledged her Facebook post could be &#8220;interpreted as racist, but in no way was intended to be&#8221;, and that she was expressing a personal opinion on attractiveness, not the colour of a person&#8217;s skin.<\/p>\n<p>She told the news station she was considering legal action for slander against unnamed individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The Clay County Development group, of which Ms Taylor is the director, is partly funded through state and federal grants, and the group provides services to elderly and low-income residents.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2016\/11\/14\/ape-in-heels-w-va-officials-under-fire-after-comments-about-michelle-obama\/\">given to the Washington Post<\/a>, Mayor Whaling said: &#8220;My comment was not intended to be racist at all&#8221; and apologised for the comment &#8220;getting out of hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was referring to my day being made for change in the White House! I am truly sorry for any hard feeling this may have caused! Those who know me know that I&#8217;m not of any way racist!&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/109A9\/production\/_92390086_melania_michelle.jpg\" alt=\"Melania Trump and Michelle Obama\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>The future and current first ladies met at the White House following the election result<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Owens Brown, director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People West Virginia chapter, said it was &#8220;unfortunate that people still have these racist undertones&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, this is a reality that we are dealing with in America today. There&#8217;s no place for these types of attitudes in our state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia Democratic Party Chairwoman Belinda Biafore issued an apology to Michelle Obama &#8220;on behalf of my fellow Mountaineers&#8221;, referring to a nickname for inhabitants of the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;West Virginia truly is better than this.
