Others burned orange-haired effigies of the businessman.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump will become the 45th US president after securing a surprise victory over Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>He is due to meet current White House incumbent Barack Obama for talks aimed at ensuring a smooth transition.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Obama &#8211; who had branded Mr Trump &#8220;unfit&#8221; for office and campaigned against him &#8211; urged all Americans to accept the result of Tuesday&#8217;s election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Defeated Mrs Clinton also told supporters Mr Trump had to be given a &#8220;chance to lead&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/B76D\/production\/_92375964_036316502-1.jpg\" alt=\"Protesters carry a Trump effigy in Los Angeles\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>In Los Angeles protesters built an effigy resembling Mr Trump&#8230;<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Despite their calls, protesters gathered in several cities across the country.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In New York, thousands marched on Trump Tower, attacking Mr Trump&#8217;s policies on immigration, gay rights and reproductive rights. Fifteen people were arrested, <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/10\/us\/trump-election-protests.html?action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=span-abc-region&amp;region=span-abc-region&amp;WT.nav=span-abc-region&amp;_r=0\">the New York Times reported.<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Protests were largely peaceful but in Oakland, California, some demonstrators smashed shop windows and threw missiles at riot police, who reportedly responded with tear gas<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A mass anti-Trump rally shut down the key 101 freeway in Los Angeles<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In Chicago, crowds <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/breaking\/ct-trump-hotel-protest-chicago-20161109-story.html\">blocked the entrance to Trump Tower<\/a>, chanting: &#8220;No Trump, No KKK, No Fascists USA&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In Portland, Oregon, demonstrators temporarily closed an interstate highway<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In Washington DC, protesters held a candlelit vigil.
