{"id":266859,"date":"2016-11-10T10:33:09","date_gmt":"2016-11-10T10:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=266859"},"modified":"2016-11-10T10:33:09","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T10:33:09","slug":"ec-shouldve-opted-for-dialogue-avoided-courts-kufuor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=266859","title":{"rendered":"EC should&#8217;ve opted for dialogue instead of courts &#8211; Kufuor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The legal tussles that have dominated the news ahead of the elections in recent times could have been avoided if the Electoral Commission (EC) had adopted a dialogue oriented approach,\u00a0Former President, John Agyekum Kufour has stated.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission\u00a0had initially disqualified 13 out of 17 flagbearers from the presidential race for filing presidential nomination forms with anomalies.<\/p>\n<p>But legal challenges from a number of the political parties saw 3 of the disqualified aspirants <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/11\/09\/nduom-two-others-cleared-to-contest-2016-presidential-elections\/\">make their way back<\/a><\/strong><\/span> into the presidential race.<\/p>\n<p>In reference to the court cases surrounding the Commission&#8217;s disqualification of the presidential aspirants, Mr. Kufuor\u00a0said the legal battles could have been prevented if the EC\u00a0had engaged political parties with\u00a0alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_265405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-265405\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/IMG_8156.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-265405\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/IMG_8156.jpg\" alt=\"Charlotte Osei, EC Chairperson\" width=\"600\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-265405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlotte Osei, EC Chairperson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking at a programme dubbed \u201cA Conversation on Leadership and the Future of Africa\u201d at his residence yesterday [Wednesday], he maintained said, &#8220;we needn\u2019t have gone to court&#8230; if everybody had been mindful, including the Electoral Commission (EC), the Peace Council, government, perhaps the method of resolution should have been one of the alternative dispute resolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What perhaps the Electoral Commission should have done should have been to invite everybody, sit down say let\u2019s check this thing. This is not good so go and do it, I give you another week,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kufuor\u00a0also reminded the EC that it was not above the law as evidenced by the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/11\/07\/supreme-court-orders-ec-to-extend-nomination-period\/\">Supreme Court&#8217;s intervention<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in the litigation from some political parties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo institution is sacrosanct. No one is above the law or should be above the law and when I say this I include even the Electoral Commission.
