{"id":266782,"date":"2016-11-09T19:00:28","date_gmt":"2016-11-09T19:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=266782"},"modified":"2016-11-09T19:00:28","modified_gmt":"2016-11-09T19:00:28","slug":"us-election-result-clinton-says-trump-must-have-chance-to-lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=266782","title":{"rendered":"US election result: Clinton says Trump must have chance to lead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Hillary Clinton, the defeated presidential candidate, says US President-elect Donald Trump must be given a chance to lead.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing in public for the first time since conceding defeat, the Democrat said she hoped Mr Trump would be a successful president for all Americans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought,&#8221; Mrs Clinton said.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump will become the 45th US president after an astounding victory.<\/p>\n<p>He will hold his first transition meeting with outgoing President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Obama, who congratulated his successor in a phone call in the early hours of the morning, said it was &#8220;no secret&#8221; that he and Mr Trump had pretty significant differences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ultimately we&#8217;re all on the same team,&#8221; he said, and people had to remember that &#8220;we are Americans first, patriots first, we all want what&#8217;s best for this country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Obama was heartened by what he heard in Mr Trump&#8217;s remarks last night, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Clinton also urged her supporters to respect the election result, saying the constitution enshrines the peaceful transition of power.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 619px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/92DC\/production\/_92369573_7fc3e761-376c-4a61-ad99-562670d3097d.jpg\" alt=\"Hillary Clinton's campaign staff react as she addresses them at a hotel in New York, November 9, 2016\" width=\"619\" height=\"348\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">There were emotional scenes at the hotel in New York where Mrs Clinton addressed supporters<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry that we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country,&#8221; Mrs Clinton told her supporters in her address in New York.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling. But some day, someone will,&#8221; Mrs Clinton said, referring to her failure to become the first female US president.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To all the little girls watching&#8230; never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>President-elect Donald Trump told cheering supporters at his campaign rally in the early hours of Wednesday that Americans must now &#8220;bind the wounds of division&#8221;, after the gruelling, acrimonious electoral battle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to tell the world community that while we will always put America&#8217;s interests first, we will deal fairly with everyone,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Paul Ryan paid tribute to his fellow Republican, saying he had &#8220;turned politics on its head&#8221; and would lead a unified Republican government.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ryan, a lukewarm supporter of the president-elect, said that his party&#8217;s strong showing in elections to the Senate and House of Representatives was thanks in no small part to Mr Trump.<\/p>\n<p>He referred repeatedly to Mr Trump&#8217;s running mate, Mike Pence, as &#8220;my good friend&#8221; and &#8220;a good man&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>From January the Republicans will control the presidency and both houses of Congress &#8211; defying pollsters&#8217; predictions.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Clinton&#8217;s running mate Tim Kaine paid tribute to her as &#8220;a history maker&#8221; and said that it was &#8220;uniquely difficult&#8221; to be elected to federal office as a woman in the US.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was &#8220;an amazing achievement&#8221; that she had won the popular vote.<\/p>\n<p>While US media report that Mrs Clinton is ahead in the popular vote by less than 1%, in the US electoral college system which determines the presidency, what matters is winning individual states.<\/p>\n<p>The last time the defeated candidate won more votes cast than the person elected president was in 2000, when Republican George Bush defeated Democrat Al Gore.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump overturned pollsters&#8217; predictions to win in key battleground states including Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>He has said his immediate priorities are restoring the country&#8217;s infrastructure and doubling its economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hillary Clinton, the defeated presidential candidate, says US President-elect Donald Trump must be given a chance to lead.
