{"id":255397,"date":"2016-10-06T10:49:42","date_gmt":"2016-10-06T10:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=255397"},"modified":"2016-10-06T10:49:42","modified_gmt":"2016-10-06T10:49:42","slug":"hearing-of-ppps-filing-fee-lawsuit-adjourned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=255397","title":{"rendered":"Hearing of PPP&#8217;s &#8216;filing fee&#8217; lawsuit adjourned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Accra High Court has adjourned the hearing of the lawsuit filed by the Progressive People&#8217;s Party (PPP) over the filing fees the\u00a0Electoral Commission (EC) is demanding from presidential and parliamentary nominees.<\/p>\n<p>The adjournment followed the absence of the Attorney General in court despite being served with the suit.<\/p>\n<p>The EC today sought to get the date for hearing originally set for the 11th of October abridged to today citing a possible delay of the Election calendar if the injunction is not dealt quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the PPP has asked the EC to blame the Attorney General for the any possible delay of election calendar.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Party, it has demonstrated commitment the case by appearing in court despite the late service of the suit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/PPP-submits-nomination-forms-EC-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-253663\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/PPP-submits-nomination-forms-EC-3.jpg\" alt=\"ppp-submits-nomination-forms-ec-3\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The PPP\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/19\/ppp-sues-ec-over-high-filing-fees\/\"><strong>filed an\u00a0interlocutory injunction<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0at the High Court on September 19 seeking to restrain the EC from going ahead with the receipt of filing fees from presidential and parliamentary candidates a day before the date scheduled for filing.<\/p>\n<p>This injunction prevented the EC from receiving the filing fees of the various parliamentary and presidential hopefuls though it <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/30\/ec-accepts-ppps-filing-fee-refuses-to-return-it\/\">bizarrely accepted<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the filing fee of the PPP flagberer, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, who was represented by the party&#8217;s Chairman, Nii Allotey Brew Hammond.<\/p>\n<p>The PPP,\u00a0among other things, was seeking a declaration that Regulation 45 of C.I. 94 is discriminatory, arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable.<\/p>\n<p>The EC opened the nominations earlier in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/08\/presidential-nominees-to-pay-ghc50000-as-filing-fee\/\">September<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and pegged the filing fees for presidential hopefuls at GHc 50,000 and that of parliamentary nominees at GHc 10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Some aggrieved parties subsequently asked the EC to review the amount describing it as \u201cexorbitant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By Fred Djabanor\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Accra High Court has adjourned the hearing of the lawsuit filed by the Progressive People&#8217;s Party (PPP) over the filing fees the\u00a0Electoral Commission (EC) is demanding from presidential and parliamentary nominees.
