{"id":253833,"date":"2016-10-01T06:02:47","date_gmt":"2016-10-01T06:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=253833"},"modified":"2016-10-01T06:02:47","modified_gmt":"2016-10-01T06:02:47","slug":"charlotte-osei-justifies-receipt-of-ppps-filing-fee-despite-suit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=253833","title":{"rendered":"Charlotte Osei justifies receipt of PPP&#8217;s filing fee despite suit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Charlotte Osei, has defended the decision of the election management body to accept the filing fee of the Progressive People\u2019s Party (PPP), despite an interlocutory injunction by the party, that has forced the Commission to decline the filing fee of all other nominees who presented their nomination forms.<\/p>\n<p>The PPP\u00a0filed a suit at the High Court on September 19, seeking an interlocutory injunction to prevent the Commission\u00a0from receiving the nominations in protest of the EC\u2019s much criticized filing fees for presidential and parliamentary aspirants.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the EC said it would not be accepting filing fees from the presidential and parliamentary aspirants untile the court rules on the substance matter in court.<\/p>\n<p>But the EC<a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/09\/30\/ec-accepts-ppps-filing-fee-refuses-to-return-it\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>\u00a0accepted the filing<\/strong><\/span><\/a> fee of the PPP flagbearer, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, who was represented by the party\u2019s Chairman, Nii Allotey Brew Hammond, at it&#8217;s headquarters on Friday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_253664\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-253664\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-253664\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/PPP-submits-nomination-forms-EC-1.jpg\" alt=\"Brew Allotey Hammond\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-253664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brew Allotey Hammond<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr. Hammond subsequently requested that the filing fee be returned\u00a0to them,\u00a0but the EC Chair, Charlotte Osei, said it was too late to return the fee, as\u00a0the PPP was aware of the legal implications, yet went ahead to\u00a0present the fee in bank draft form.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the media after the exercise, Madam\u00a0Charlotte Osei explained that, the Commission accepted the filing fee of the PPP because they assumed the party was no longer interested in pursuing the case in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy presenting it; I thought they had withdrawn the case, that was the impression,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The EC opened nominations earlier in\u00a0September, and pegged the filing fees for presidential hopefuls at GHc 50,000, and that of parliamentary nominees at GHc 10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Some aggrieved parties subsequently asked the EC to review the amount describing it as \u201cexorbitant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom-led PPP, followed its concerns with a lawsuit, seeking an injunction to prevent the EC from receiving the nominations until the matter is determined.<\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen in court, what the impact of today&#8217;s incident, will have on the substantive case in court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Marian Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<br \/>\n<a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EfeAnsah\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @EfeAnsah<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Charlotte Osei, has defended the decision of the election management body to accept the filing fee of the Progressive People\u2019s Party (PPP), despite an interlocutory injunction by the party, that has forced the Commission to decline the filing fee of all other nominees who presented their nomination forms.
