{"id":248571,"date":"2016-09-15T16:18:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-15T16:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=248571"},"modified":"2016-09-15T16:18:00","modified_gmt":"2016-09-15T16:18:00","slug":"lmvca-to-remember-2015-voters-register-demo-with-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=248571","title":{"rendered":"LMVCA to remember 2015 voters&#8217; register demo with rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) will hold a rally to observe the one year anniversary of the infamous demonstration over the credibility of the voter\u2019s register in 2015 which saw police brutalize a number of the protesters for veering off the prescribed route.<\/p>\n<p>The rally will come off tomorrow [Friday], September 16 at Okaishie drug lane at 1pm.<\/p>\n<p>Expected to speak at the rally are the convener of the group; David Asante, along with Kennedy Agyapong, David, Sammy Awuku, Abu Ramadan, Hopeson Adoye, Ibrahim Adjei, Justice Adzakumah, Charles Owusu and Owusu Bempah.<\/p>\n<p>The Alliance has said, \u201cin commemoration of that fateful day when a peaceful demonstration was marred by the brute force of the security operatives, LMVCA is therefore calling on all democracy-loving Ghanaians to attend this rally for a progress report on the demand for a credible free fair open and transparent election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On September 16, 2015, the LMVCA in collaboration with the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), Movement for Change, some opposition political parties and other civil society groups, held a demonstration to present a petition to the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to demand a credible voters\u2019 register for the 2016 elections.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_248572\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-248572\" style=\"width: 711px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/gabby-beaten-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-248572 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/gabby-beaten-1.jpg\" alt=\"gabby-beaten-1\" width=\"711\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-248572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) , Gabby Asare Otchere Darko was flogged with horse whips by the Police<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The demonstration was disrupted when the police and security operatives charged on protesters armed with batons, hot water cannons and tear gas, leading to several civilian casualties.<\/p>\n<p>The police have maintained that protestors were acting violently towards them hence their actions but some protesters <strong>Citi News<\/strong> spoke to in the aftermath of the incident said protesters became violent after the Police attacked them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/gabby-beaten-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-248573\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/gabby-beaten-2.jpg\" alt=\"gabby-beaten-2\" width=\"711\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the demonstrators, Justice Adzakumah, lost an eye as a result of the aggression from the police.\u00a020 people, including David Asante, were detained for violating rules regarding the protest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) will hold a rally to observe the one year anniversary of the infamous demonstration over the credibility of the voter\u2019s register in 2015 which saw police brutalize a number of the protesters for veering off the prescribed route.
