{"id":244596,"date":"2016-08-31T16:00:28","date_gmt":"2016-08-31T16:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=244596"},"modified":"2016-08-31T16:00:28","modified_gmt":"2016-08-31T16:00:28","slug":"nagrat-gives-govt-2-month-ultimatum-over-arrears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=244596","title":{"rendered":"NAGRAT gives Gov&#8217;t 2-month ultimatum over arrears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Association of Graduate Teachers, (NAGRAT) has given government\u00a0a two-month ultimatum to settle all arrears owed public Senior High Schools and teachers otherwise they will \u201cadvise themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to NAGRAT, the failure of the government to invest in education had resulted in the declining standards in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen government subventions to various directorates are not paid it pacts negatively on all spheres of educational activity. Just as regional and district directorates of education have been starved of funding, we have reasons to conclude that even the Ghana Education Service Headquarters has not been spared. The situation is that bad at all levels but our directors are tight-lipped in voicing their ordeals for fear that they might be victimized,\u201d the President of NAGRAT, Christian Addae-Poku said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAGRAT expects that the issues raised regarding the payment of outstanding subventions to our education offices, payment of all salaries and allowances in arrears owed teachers, the conduct of promotion interviews and promotion of teachers to be fully addressed by the end of October, 2016. The failure of which teachers will advise themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene as lack of investment in the Ghana\u2019s educational sector could be detrimental to the country\u2019s developmental agenda<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plain language is that our education is failing, Our district offices are virtually non-functional and neither the government nor the ordinary citizen can be proud of this. Mr. President we humbly implore you to step in and save this situation,\u201d Mr. Addae-Poku appealed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_238327\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-238327\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jane-Nana-Opoku-Agyemang-800x445.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-238327\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jane-Nana-Opoku-Agyemang-800x445.jpg\" alt=\"Education Minister Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang \" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-238327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Education Minister Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>GNAT, NAGRAT, CHASS fight GES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following weeks of agitations by the Conference of Heads and Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana Education Service (GES) announced that it had released some money to cover subsidies which were owed the secondary schools.<\/p>\n<p>CHASS\u00a0had issued a threat to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/20\/chass-to-shutdown-schools-over-unpaid-subsidies\/\"><strong>close down<\/strong><\/a><\/span> Senior High Schools (SHS) nationwide, following delays by the government in paying the subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>GNAT hinted that, they might <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/22\/gnat-dares-ges-boss-threatens-strike-over-shs-subsidies\/\">declare a nationwide strike<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>in September 2016, if the subsidy arrears of the various second-cycle institutions\u00a0were not paid.<\/p>\n<p>NAGRAT also insisted that the unions <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/28\/nagrat-worried-over-non-payment-of-shs-subsidies\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>had a say in the matter<\/strong><\/span><\/a> as the work of the teachers were\u00a0affected by the situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NAGRAT is not happy with the way things are because we can\u2019t just imagine how you fail to fund education and you still expect education to function well.
