{"id":244038,"date":"2016-08-29T16:32:29","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T16:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=244038"},"modified":"2016-08-29T16:32:29","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T16:32:29","slug":"iran-rolls-out-domestic-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=244038","title":{"rendered":"Iran rolls out domestic internet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Iran has announced it has completed the first phase of its plan to operate a &#8220;national internet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>An inauguration ceremony was held on Sunday by the country&#8217;s communications and information technology minister, Mahmoud Vaezi.<\/p>\n<p>The state news agency Irna said the initiative would offer &#8220;high quality, high speed&#8221; connections at &#8220;low costs&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But critics suggest the true aim is to tighten the authorities&#8217; control over citizens&#8217; use of the net.<\/p>\n<p>Although Iran already blocks access to overseas-based social media services &#8211; including Twitter, Instagram and Facebook &#8211; many users still access them via proxy sites and virtual private networks (VPNs).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Inefficient&#8217; filters<\/h2>\n<p>The idea behind the project was first made public in 2010, and it was originally intended to be fully operational by 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The government says the goal is to create an isolated domestic intranet that can be used to promote Islamic content and raise digital awareness among the public.<\/p>\n<p>It intends to replace the current system, in which officials seek to limit which parts of the existing internet people have access to via filters &#8211; an effort Mr Vaezi described as being &#8220;inefficient&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/0F91\/production\/_90958930_034280604-1.jpg\" alt=\"Mahmoud Vaezi\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>Mr Vaezi said that whenever the government tried to filter access to a site, &#8220;an alternative&#8221; would appear in its place<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;All domestic activities, services, applications [and] various types of contents&#8230; are included in the national internet,&#8221; he declared at the launch.<\/p>\n<p>The minister added that the initiative would make it easier to combat cyber-threats. At the ceremony, another official said the Information Technology ministry had recently had to combat several distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks &#8211; attempts to overwhelm its computer servers by flooding them with traffic.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by Mehr, another Tehran-based news agency:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">the first phase of the rollout involves providing access to e-government services and domestic web pages<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">a second phase, due in February 2017, will add domestic video content<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">a third phase, due in March 2017, will introduce further services and provide support for companies involved in international trade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Local reports state that users&#8217; privacy will be respected.<\/p>\n<p>But the British human rights campaign group Article 19 has warned that this might not be the case.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/F42A\/production\/_90960526_03280da6-6758-4aa8-9a9a-5e95fdb2f880.jpg\" alt=\"Iran internet map\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Given Iran&#8217;s record in violating its human rights commitments based on civil and political (including religious and ethnic) grounds, the development of projects such as the national internet are especially concerning,&#8221; it said in a report published earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The National Internet Project could pave the way for further isolation, surveillance and information retention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[It] risks severely isolating the Iranian people from the rest of the online world, limiting access to information and constraining attempts at collective action and public protest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iran has announced it has completed the first phase of its plan to operate a &#8220;national internet&#8221;.
