{"id":243952,"date":"2016-08-29T15:09:35","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T15:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=243952"},"modified":"2016-08-29T15:09:35","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T15:09:35","slug":"court-to-rule-on-biomedical-scientists-strike-on-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=243952","title":{"rendered":"Court to rule on biomedical scientists&#8217; strike on Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ghana Association of Biomedical\u00a0Laboratory\u00a0Scientists (GAMBLS), has said that it will appear before the High Court tomorrow (Tuesday) to respond to a suit filed against it by the National Labour Commission (NLC), in a bid to get the scientists to call off their week-long strike.<\/p>\n<p>The NLC <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/23\/nlc-sues-striking-biomedical-lab-scientists\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>sued the striking<\/strong><\/span><\/a> biomedical scientists after it <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/19\/dont-strike-nlc-warns-biomedical-lab-scientists\/\">had earlier ordered<\/a><\/strong><\/span> them not to embark on their industrial action.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;rTuuhjpji7sV6PTr5hplV9WaIgVrQNW6&#8243;]The President of GAMBLS, Ignatius Awinbuno, told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> that they intend to honour the summons by the court on Tuesday, but will not call off their strike until a ruling is made on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The strike is indefinite. Our next hurdle is to meet the court on Tuesday. The Labour Commission has given us a restraining order and that will be enforced by the court so we\u2019ve been summoned to the court on Tuesday,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ll go and present our case and see whether they will accept it. The Labour Commission says our strike is illegal. The Labour Commission cannot enforce it, it\u2019s the court that will enforce it. Whatever the court decides, we\u2019ll meet with our lawyers and take the next step.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Health\u00a0Minister to blame&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The biomedical scientists laid down their tools to highlight <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/18\/biomedical-lab-scientists-to-strike-on-aug-22\/\"><strong>their displeasure<\/strong><\/a><\/span> with government\u2019s non-implementation of the National Health Laboratory policy which they say will help raise the quality of laboratory science practice in the country.<\/p>\n<p>GAMBLS\u00a0blamed the Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia for the consequences of their strike, including lives that could\u00a0be lost as a result, as he had not shown any commitment towards resolving their issues.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a press conference in Accra last Monday, Ignatius Awimibumo, said despite their concerns that the strike might lead to loss of lives,\u00a0they feel\u00a0the only way to persuade the Ministry to resolve their issues was a strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is frustration. Any death should be blamed on\u00a0the Minister of Health. He has the power to do what he has to do. He should just take that bold step.\u00a0This is what leadership is about. He should provide leadership to the health sector. Health work is team work.
