{"id":242615,"date":"2016-08-24T15:03:35","date_gmt":"2016-08-24T15:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=242615"},"modified":"2016-08-24T15:03:35","modified_gmt":"2016-08-24T15:03:35","slug":"health-ministry-to-investigate-striking-lab-scientists-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=242615","title":{"rendered":"Health Ministry to investigate striking lab\u00a0scientists&#8217; concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Health has set up a committee to investigate the demands by the striking\u00a0Ghana Association of Biomedical\u00a0Laboratory\u00a0Scientists (GABMLS).<\/p>\n<p>The members of GABMLS laid down their tools on August 22, to highlight <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/18\/biomedical-lab-scientists-to-strike-on-aug-22\/\"><strong>their displeasure<\/strong><\/a><\/span> with government\u2019s non-implementation of the National Health Laboratory policy which they say will help raise the quality of laboratory science practice in the country.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;0F2YBV8YQoMQXbHc9uf9wahe59pr2bx4&#8243;]GABMLS\u00a0\u00a0has said the Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia, should be blamed for the consequences of the strike, including lives that would be lost as a result.<\/p>\n<p>The National Labour Commission (NLC), has since filed a suit at the Labour Division of the High Court against the striking biomedical laboratory scientists, praying the court to compel them to go back to post.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/19\/dont-strike-nlc-warns-biomedical-lab-scientists\/\">had ordered<\/a><\/strong><\/span> them not to embark on the strike, and has stated that the action is illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The developments notwithstanding, the Public Relations Officer for the Health Ministry, Tony Goodman, told\u00a0<strong>Citi News<\/strong>\u00a0that his outfit would wait for a report from the newly set up committee before any further action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0GABMLS remains resolute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The association of biomedical scientists has however said the NLC suit alone will not compel them to call off its strike.<\/p>\n<p>In a <strong>Citi News<\/strong> interview, Spokesperson for the Association, Dennis Adu- Gyasi, said his colleagues would only call off the strike if the court ordered so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been served with the writ and we are going to meet in court on the 30<sup>th<\/sup>. As it stands now, till we meet in court and listen to whatever the court will be advising, our strike is still continuing unabated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Adu-Gyasi also bemoaned the fact that the NLC had not fought\u00a0enough for his association saying &#8221; the custodians of the law should have even been the arbiter between us and the Ministry but unfortunately, they have used the law to our disadvantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are considered as essential service providers, we expected the Labour Commission to have treated the matter per the schedule in 162 in the act 651. For essential services, three days, the matters should have been resolved.
