{"id":242007,"date":"2016-08-22T19:30:20","date_gmt":"2016-08-22T19:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=242007"},"modified":"2016-08-22T19:30:20","modified_gmt":"2016-08-22T19:30:20","slug":"montie-trio-deserved-mahamas-mercy-lawyer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=242007","title":{"rendered":"Montie trio deserved Mahama&#8217;s mercy \u2013 Lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the lawyers for the Montie FM trio who are serving a four-month\u00a0prison sentence for threatening the lives of judges, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has lauded President John Mahama for pardoning his clients saying they deserved it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Like any Ghanaian, we are entitled to this prerogative of mercy and the President had to exercise it,\u201d he said on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>President John Mahama on Monday remitted the four-month sentence given the<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/22\/mahama-pardons-montie-3\/\"><strong>\u00a0trio<\/strong><\/a><\/span>; Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and Salifu Maase, alias Mugabe, who had already served one month of their jail term.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;z3NBmU7vmMYVvhfpoWAyLBH7e6myXCOV&#8221;]A statement signed by the Minister of Communication, Edward Omane Boamah, said the President took the decision in consultation with the Council of State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision of His Excellency the President to remit their sentences on compassionate grounds follows a petition submitted to him by the contemnors appealing to the President to exercise his prerogative of mercy even as they continue to express deep remorse and regret for the unacceptable statements they made against the Judiciary,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mahama hasn&#8217;t undermined the judiciary &#8211; Lawyer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While speaking on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>, Edudzi Tamakloe argued that, President Mahama in triggering the necessary laws for the pardon has not undermined the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe action taken by the President cannot in the remotest sense by any shred of legal reasoning or imagination amounts to a slap in the face of the judiciary,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He was also\u00a0extremely grateful to the President for the gesture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely thankful to the President, we are equally thankful the good people of Ghana. We are continuing with our sincerest apology to the entire judiciary and the people of Ghana,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the pardoning, top officials of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) signed a petition calling on the President to free the contemnors claiming the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/27\/ndc-slams-jailing-of-montie-3-urges-members-to-be-calm\/\"><strong>sentencing was harsh<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and also because they had apologized for their acts.<\/p>\n<p>Education Minister, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, deputy Education Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur and Foreign Affairs Minister, Hanna Tetteh all endorsed the petition.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_237818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-237818\" style=\"width: 589px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-237818\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/HannaMOntie.jpg\" alt=\"Foreign Affairs Minister Hanna Tetteh signing the petition\" width=\"589\" height=\"544\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-237818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Foreign Affairs Minister Hanna Tetteh signing the petition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other Ministers including Trade Minister, Ekow Spio Garbrah and Transport Minister, Fiifi Kwetey and General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia all <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/08\/10\/asiedu-nketia-portuphy-visit-montie-3-in-nsawam-photos\/\">visited the trio <\/a><\/strong><\/span>in jail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Godwin A.
