{"id":236647,"date":"2016-08-04T11:37:11","date_gmt":"2016-08-04T11:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=236647"},"modified":"2016-08-04T11:37:11","modified_gmt":"2016-08-04T11:37:11","slug":"democracy-without-checks-worse-than-dictatorship-kan-dapaah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=236647","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Democracy without checks worse than dictatorship&#8217; &#8211; Kan Dapaah [Audio]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former Member of Parliament under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Kan Daapah has expressed concern about the absence of checks and balances in Ghana\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Dapaah believes the existence of democracy in a country such as Ghana, without the necessary checks and balances is worse than military dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocracy is good, we should very happy that we have parliamentary democracy but parliamentary democracy without checks and balances is worse than military dictatorship and that is what we have today ,\u201d Kan Daapah said.<\/p>\n<p>He further expressed concerns about what he calls excessive power vested in the Executive,saying the \u201cexecutive now overshadows the legislature and the judiciary in this country.<\/p>\n<p>Kan Dapaah who is currently the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said the Subsidiary committees \u00a0have been unable to correct the ills of excessive executive power because the committee has more members from government than the Minority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPAC for instance, the Chairman who is from the minority side has no voting right.
