{"id":235278,"date":"2016-07-29T13:44:46","date_gmt":"2016-07-29T13:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=235278"},"modified":"2016-07-29T13:44:46","modified_gmt":"2016-07-29T13:44:46","slug":"no-serious-president-would-free-montie-3-prof-karikari","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=235278","title":{"rendered":"No serious president would free Montie 3 &#8211; Prof Karikari"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The founder of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Professor Kwame Karikari, has urged President John Dramani Mahama not to heed to calls for him to pardon the two panelists, and the host of the\u00a0\u2018Pampaso\u2019 show on Accra-based Montie FM, who were\u00a0convicted \u00a0of contempt and jailed \u00a0by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Professor\u00a0Karikari believes that\u00a0President Mahama&#8217;s chances in the election somewhat hinges on the decision he makes on the Montie FM trio, and that sanctioning their release would be &#8216;politically suicidal.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;7iY2e5JPPo1VOYZO2rNjROneI9cBNnFp&#8221;]&#8221;There\u2019s no serious president in a democracy that will cede to a call like that under our circumstances. It will be politically suicidal for the president to accede to the call of his party,&#8221; he told <strong>the media<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and\u00a0Salifu Maase, alias Mugabe, were sentenced to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/27\/montie-panelists-mugabe-jailed-4-months\/\"><strong>serve four months in jail<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>, after being found guilty of contempt by the Supreme Court, for\u00a0threatening the lives of the judges who were presiding over a\u00a0case on the credibility of the voters\u2019 register.<\/p>\n<p>They are <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/28\/montie-fm-trio-languish-in-nsawam-prison\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>currently being held<\/strong><\/span><\/a> at the Nsawam prison.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers for the trio say they\u00a0intend to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/28\/lawyers-to-petition-mahama-to-pardon-montie-3\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">petition President Mahama<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>to pardon them,\u00a0prompting the opening of a\u00a0petition book yesterday\u00a0[Thursday].<\/p>\n<p>The book, opened by a group calling itself the\u00a0Research and Advocacy Platform (RAP), has <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/28\/valerie-sawyerr-others-sign-petition-book-to-free-montie-3\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>garnered several signatures<\/strong><\/span><\/a> including those of high-profile government officials including the Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare and an official at the presidency, Valerie Sawyerr.<\/p>\n<p>But Professor Karikari believes if President Mahama bows to the pressure being mounted on him to use his prerogative of mercy, it\u00a0will send out a wrong signal to other media practitioners that they won&#8217;t be punished if they commit similar offences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If he does [release them], that he will be giving the orders to all the radio stations who will raise mayhem in this country. What he\u2019ll be saying is that, the radio stations can do as they please, court or no court. They can bastardize the courts, incite violence, threaten people\u2019s lives and even go ahead and get people to carry out the threats,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Some members of the NDC, who many believe the station sympathizes with, \u00a0on Thursday protested at the party\u2019s\u00a0headquarters \u00a0requesting a Presidential pardon for the the three or <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/28\/no-mugabe-no-vote-ndc-supporters-to-mahama\/\"><strong>risk losing their votes<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in the December polls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Montie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-234751\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Montie.jpg\" alt=\"Montie\" width=\"600\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Montie boys&#8217; jailed and fined<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Montie FM trio, were also ordered to pay an amount of 10, 000 cedis each or risk serving an extra month in jail. The fines have since been paid.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/27\/owners-of-montie-fm-fined\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">directors of the station<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, were also fined by the court for failing to prevent the incident on their platform.\u00a0Network Broadcasting Limited, and Zeze Media, which owns the frequency on which Montie FM is broadcast, were fined\u00a0Ghc30,000 each.<\/p>\n<p>In presenting the sentences,\u00a0the Presiding judge, Sophia Akuffo, stated that\u00a0the two panelists had willfully attacked the Chief Justice and lowered the authority of the court by insisting that they will not accept its judgment on a controversial matter of the voter\u2019s register.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Montie 3 should have gotten 6-months<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a Former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Sam Okudjeto, has opined that the trio should have been handed a minimum of six months prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that the four-month prison sentence is not enough to serve as a deterrent to others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I were there, I would have given them more than that because I am so worried about what I call irresponsibility that has almost crept into political arena whereby people use the television and radio as a platform for vulgar abuse, threats.That is not what the media is meant for and I think that a lot of characters that are appearing on television should not be allowed.
