{"id":235133,"date":"2016-07-28T19:31:33","date_gmt":"2016-07-28T19:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=235133"},"modified":"2016-07-28T19:31:33","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T19:31:33","slug":"montie-fm-trio-languish-in-nsawam-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=235133","title":{"rendered":"Montie FM trio &#8216;languish&#8217; in Nsawam prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0two panelists, and the host of the\u00a0\u2018Pampaso\u2019 show on Accra-based Montie FM, who were\u00a0convicted \u00a0of contempt and jailed \u00a0by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, have been taken to the country&#8217;s major prison facility at Nsawam.<\/p>\n<p>Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and\u00a0Salifu Maase, alias Mugabe, were sentenced to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/27\/montie-panelists-mugabe-jailed-4-months\/\"><strong>serve four months in jail<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>on Wednesday, after being found guilty of contempt by the apex court, for\u00a0threatening the lives of the judges who were presiding over a\u00a0case on the credibility of the voters\u2019 register.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;inEDt612w60jZ5Jdpcl3AM0WXevcRkYq&#8221;]One of the lawyers of the trio, George Loh, confirmed this on <strong>Eyewitness News\u00a0<\/strong>on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My understanding is that they are at the Nsawam prison&#8221; he said, when quizzed by the host of the show, Richard Dela Sky, on the whereabouts of\u00a0the convicts.<\/p>\n<p>The trio, were also ordered to pay an amount of 10, 000 cedis each or risk serving an extra month in jail.<\/p>\n<p>Several persons, including the Foreign Affairs Minister, <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/27\/judges-were-harsh-on-montie-fm-trio-hanna-tetteh\/\"><strong>Hanna Tetteh<\/strong><\/a><\/span> as well as her party the <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/27\/ndc-slams-jailing-of-montie-3-urges-members-to-be-calm\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>National Democratic Congress<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (NDC), have described\u00a0that the sentence handed out to the three as\u00a0harsh.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers for the trio say they\u00a0intend to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/28\/lawyers-to-petition-mahama-to-pardon-montie-3\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">petition President Mahama<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>to pardon them,\u00a0prompting the opening of a\u00a0petition book today [Thursday].<\/p>\n<p>The book, opened by a group calling itself the\u00a0Research and Advocacy Platform (RAP), has <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/28\/valerie-sawyerr-others-sign-petition-book-to-free-montie-3\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>garnered several signatures<\/strong><\/span><\/a> including those of high-profile government officials including the Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare and an official at the presidency, Valerie Sawyerr.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235075\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Okudzeto-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-235075\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Okudzeto-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Dept. Education Minister and MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Sentence &#8216;appropriate&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Others have applauded the judges for the sentence given to the three persons.<\/p>\n<p>A private legal practitioner, John Ndebugri, said that the 4-month jail terms given to the them\u00a0were appropriate\u00a0for the offences they were convicted\u00a0of.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that the sentences are appropriate&#8230;A message has to be sent very clearly to media practitioners, social commentators and lawyers like myself who don&#8217;t\u00a0want to understand the meaning of the judicial process so that red lines are drawn and once you cross them, you come within the firing line and you&#8217;ll be fired,&#8221; Ndebugri said on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Montie 3 should have been jailed 6-months<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a Former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Sam Okudjeto, has opined that the trio should have been handed a minimum of six months prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that the four-month prison sentence is not enough to serve as a deterrent to others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I were there, I would have given them more than that because I am so worried about what I call irresponsibility that has almost crept into political arena whereby people use the television and radio as a platform for vulgar abuse, threats.That is not what the media is meant for and I think that a lot of characters that are appearing on television should not be allowed.
