{"id":234935,"date":"2016-07-28T15:42:04","date_gmt":"2016-07-28T15:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=234935"},"modified":"2016-07-28T15:42:04","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T15:42:04","slug":"nagrat-worried-over-non-payment-of-shs-subsidies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=234935","title":{"rendered":"NAGRAT &#8216;worried&#8217; over non-payment of SHS subsidies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite calls\u00a0by the Ghana Education Service [GES] for teacher unions to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/23\/stay-out-of-subsidies-row-ges-warns-gnat\/\"><strong>stay out its\u00a0row<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0with the\u00a0Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), over the payment of subsidies, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has waded into the debate.<\/p>\n<p>CHASS\u00a0had earlier issued a threat to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/20\/chass-to-shutdown-schools-over-unpaid-subsidies\/\"><strong>close down<\/strong><\/a><\/span> Senior High Schools (SHS) nationwide, following delays by the government in paying the subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;R5nx55Q6ZFoiIsVLXbLlNC8e5ideVEIC&#8221;]GNAT hinted that, they might <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/22\/gnat-dares-ges-boss-threatens-strike-over-shs-subsidies\/\"><strong>declare a nationwide strike<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in September 2016, if the subsidy arrears of the various second-cycle institutions are not paid.<\/p>\n<p>However, the GES responded, saying\u00a0that GNAT\u2019s threat is out of place as they and NAGRAT are not part of CHASS and had no stake in the matter.<\/p>\n<p>NAGRAT insists that the unions have a say in the matter as the work of the teachers are affected by the situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NAGRAT is not happy with the way things are because we can\u2019t just imagine how you fail to fund education and you still expect education to function well. We are reducing ourselves to mediocrity where people think that whether we have the resources or not, education must go on,&#8221; the President of NAGRAT, Christian Addae Poku told <strong>Citi News.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Somebody must have the responsibility of ensuring that the right materials are provided. So that teaching and learning will go on well. So for us as teachers, we are also worried and it will have a lot of implications on our work if the right materials are not there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_233083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233083\" style=\"width: 539px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/mr.-jacob-kor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-233083\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/mr.-jacob-kor.jpg\" alt=\"Director General of GES, Jacob Kor\" width=\"539\" height=\"392\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Director General of GES, Jacob Kor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>GES to punish heads if&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ghana Education Service (GES), at a press conference in response to CHASS&#8217; claims, blamed non-payment of the government subsidies to public Senior High schools on the late submission of students\u2019 data by headteachers, to enable the processing of the grants.<\/p>\n<p>According to the GES, school heads are required to present students\u2019 data on time to help fast-track the processing of the grants and subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>The Director General of GES, Jacob Kor, said at the press conference\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cthe untimely release of subsidies and grants is partly due to the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/21\/ges-boss-threatens-to-punish-shs-heads-over-subsidies\/\"><strong>lackadaisical attitudes<\/strong><\/a><\/span> of some of the heads in terms of the submission of data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the list of schools that have not submitted data for the data we are processing now. How do we process some and leave others.
