{"id":232913,"date":"2016-07-22T06:21:45","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T06:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=232913"},"modified":"2016-07-22T06:21:45","modified_gmt":"2016-07-22T06:21:45","slug":"google-uses-ai-to-save-on-electricity-from-data-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=232913","title":{"rendered":"Google uses AI to save on electricity from data centres"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Its artificial intelligence division, DeepMind, has cut Google&#8217;s data centres&#8217; energy consumption by 15%, using a machine-learning algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>Data centres run the equipment that processes the data consumed by internet users, and it takes a lot of energy to keep their servers cool.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the newer ones are now being built in colder climates.<\/p>\n<p>But some estimates suggest they are now responsible for 2% of global greenhouse-gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being able to put a dent in that benefits the world in general,&#8221; said DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/A66E\/production\/_90460624_datacentre6.jpg\" alt=\"Water tank\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Fed vast swathes of historical data collected by sensors measuring temperature and power, DeepMind&#8217;s general purpose algorithm &#8211; similar to the one trained to play Atari games &#8211; had come up with a real-time, adaptive system that had cut the cost of cooling by 40% and the overall energy consumption by 15%, Mr Suleyman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will have a significant environmental impact,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The system will be rolled out across all of Google&#8217;s data centres by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>And, in six weeks, DeepMind will share the details of the system in a White Paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are already talking to non-Google partners about using the same algorithm,&#8221; Mr Suleyman said, adding it could work equally well in large manufacturing facilities and even national energy grids.<\/p>\n<p>In its 2015 green energy report, campaign group Greenpeace praised Apple, Google and Facebook for their commitments to the use of 100% renewable energy in their data centres.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Its artificial intelligence division, DeepMind, has cut Google&#8217;s data centres&#8217; energy consumption by 15%, using a machine-learning algorithm.
