{"id":232766,"date":"2016-07-20T13:54:24","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T13:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=232766"},"modified":"2016-07-20T13:54:24","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T13:54:24","slug":"gbc-workers-to-strike-if-board-is-retained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=232766","title":{"rendered":"GBC workers to strike if board is retained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), have threatened to embark on a strike if their demands for the dissolution of the Board of the Corporation is not met.<\/p>\n<p>The state broadcaster\u2019s workers Union have barred members of the GBC Board, chaired by Richard Kwame Asante from entering the corporation\u2019s premises.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;eLUd95r8KyfAR1yWnCIfFsSUJbn7j8CX&#8221;]They have accused the board of \u201cmicromanaging the affairs of GBC\u201d and misappropriating GBC\u2019s internally generated funds by \u201cillegally\u201d employing directors without recourse to due process.<\/p>\n<p>One of the leaders of the Union, Samuel Ayitey, said on Wednesday that they are prepared to lay down their tools, disrupting transmission across the country, if the situation is not resolved before\u00a0Monday, July 25th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no turning back. If my job is on the line, the numerous dependents that you and I have, their lives are equally on the line so it is either I go for it or they come for me.\u00a0It is either we sit down for 24 hours without any transmission countrywide or Monday morning we hold a press conference and invite all the press in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GBC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-230878\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GBC.jpg\" alt=\"GBC\" width=\"630\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>NMC absolves GBC Board<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the National Media Commission (NMC), has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/15\/nmc-clears-gbc-board-of-wrongdoing\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>cleared the governing board<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of GBC of\u00a0any wrongdoing after a petition sent to them by the workers&#8217; union.<\/p>\n<p>The Executive Secretary of NMC, George Sarpong, \u00a0debunked the claims saying their investigations proved that the board was innocent of the allegations that had been levelled against it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe GBC union made a number of allegations to the commission. The commission established a committee to independently investigate the claims and the committee took each of the claims one by one and gave the union the opportunity to prove the case against the people. They could not substantiate any of the claims they made,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took time to investigate this matter thoroughly beyond the claim that the GBC union made. The commission went out of its ways and investigate further into the matter and found that those allegations were unsustainable,\u201d Mr. Sarpong added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NMC &#8216;in bed&#8217; with board<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The workers accused the NMC of <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/15\/dissolve-gbc-board-now-workers-demand\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>betraying them<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0by lodging a complaint with the Police because of their decision\u00a0to prohibit\u00a0the GBC board members from entering the premises.<\/p>\n<p>A worker at the GBC who spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>\u00a0on condition of anonymity said:\u00a0\u201cThe NMC has refused to objectively consider the issues in question, when they came out with their fictitious reports earlier to clear the board, they were popping champagne and celebrating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Protesting workers to be punished\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Management of the GBC is set to <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/19\/gbc-workers-protesting-against-board-to-face-punishment\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>crack down on<\/strong><\/span><\/a> the protesting workers.<\/p>\n<p>A memo sighted by <strong>Citi News<\/strong> indicated that, any person who was a signatory to a document declaring the GBC board persona non grata, will be\u00a0punished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGBC management considers the whole write up as misconduct on the part of the signatories to the notice and appropriate procedures will be invoked to ensure sanity within the corporation\u2019s governance structure,\u201d the memo stated.<\/p>\n<p>The memo also noted that, the \u201cthe union does not have the mandate to declare the board persona non grata.
