{"id":230823,"date":"2016-07-14T06:06:23","date_gmt":"2016-07-14T06:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=230823"},"modified":"2016-07-14T06:06:23","modified_gmt":"2016-07-14T06:06:23","slug":"what-was-abachas-2m-used-for-frank-agyekum-asks-rawlings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=230823","title":{"rendered":"What was Abacha&#8217;s $2m used for? &#8211; Frank Agyekum asks Rawlings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spokesperson for \u00a0former President John Kufuor, Frank Agyekum, has called on former President Rawlings to state what the $2 million he confessed to receiving from a former Nigerian president was used for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf former President Rawlings has come out to say that he did take the money, the $2 million, it is for us to start asking questions like\u00a0what happened to the money,\u201d Mr. Agyekum said on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;1h3U4RC0TykMbIjYispkoalfzBVNbtmW&#8221;]Mr. Rawlings, while speaking to the Guardian Newspaper in Nigeria, <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/07\/11\/nigerias-abacha-gave-me-2m-not-5m-rawlings-confesses\/\">admitted to receiving $2 million<\/a><\/strong><\/span> from the President of Nigeria in 1998, Sani Abacha.<\/p>\n<p>Reports about the money were rife in\u00a01998, and a former\u00a0Member of Parliament for New Juabeng North, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, was at the forefront of calls for a probe into the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>But following Mr. Rawlings&#8217; confession, Mr. Owusu Agyeman has now said it should <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/contextly.com\/redirect\/?id=OGqHRqzJVf:230321:2934:13:::sidebar:5786896bc90e80-25880188\">warrant forgiveness<\/a><\/strong><\/span> from Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p>The confession notwithstanding, Mr Agyekum has noted that though Mr. Rawlings confessed to receiving the money, he has not disclosed to Ghanaians what the money was used for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow was the money accounted for because as far as I am concerned, I have never heard it being accounted for to the state and by the state and we don\u2019t know what happened to the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ghanaians should\u00a0demand answers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ghanaians should also be more interested in what became of the $2 million dollars and demand answers from Mr. Rawlings according to Mr. Agyekum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is for all of us to start asking questions as to how the money came to be and the purposes for which it was used. It is not just for President Kufuor to ask those questions&#8230; \u00a0we should know why he took the money, what use the money was put to and whether the state was informed and accounted to,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Agyekum\u00a0further challenged Mr. Rawlings to live up to his anti-corruption rhetoric by coming clean on what the money was used for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe [Rawlings] is forever talking about integrity, about transparency, about accountability.
