{"id":228568,"date":"2016-07-06T16:47:59","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T16:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=228568"},"modified":"2016-07-06T16:47:59","modified_gmt":"2016-07-06T16:47:59","slug":"boston-cabbie-shocked-at-100-reward-for-returning-187000-left-in-his-taxi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=228568","title":{"rendered":"Boston cabbie shocked at $100 reward for returning $187,000 left in his taxi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Boston taxi cab driver is disappointed he only received a $100 reward after returning $187,000 cash lost in his car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought maybe he would give $500 or $1,000, maybe one of those bundles,\u201d Raymond (Buzzy) MacCausland, the lucky cabbie who found the fortune told the Daily News.<\/p>\n<p>MacCausland was driving a homeless man who had inherited his riches after living in a shelter for six months, the 72-year-old cabbie remembered.<\/p>\n<p>After dropping him off at a hotel, MacCausland later noticed he left the bag filled with bills behind. He looked in the bag to find the man\u2019s name \u2014 and stumbled across stacks of $50 and $100 bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen money like that before. It was quite a sight when they dumped it on the table,\u201d he told the News.<br \/>\nWhen he saw the piles of money in the bag, Buzzy said three thoughts ran through his head.<\/p>\n<p>First, if he should be worried that the man was dangerous and after for him the money.<\/p>\n<p>Second, if he should just take the treasure and go home.<\/p>\n<p>He decided on his third idea: to bring the bag of cash to the police station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the way I am. I don\u2019t steal anything; I\u2019ve never been a crook,\u201d MacCausland said. \u201cIt would have been nice to see a lot of money like that though \u2014 probably changes lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the money was returned to its rightful owner, the man gave MacCausland $100 as a reward for his honesty \u2014 less than half a penny on the dollar.<\/p>\n<p>The honest cabbie then gave the man another ride back to the hotel, where he was staying.<\/p>\n<p>Dropping him off again, MacCausland admitted he was hoping the man would forget to take his money a second time.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019ll happen again in my lifetime,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>About 30 years ago, MacCausland had a similar situation, finding a briefcase with about $10,000 inside at the airport. That man who lost it didn\u2019t give him any reward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This hackney driver exhibited exemplary behavior and his honest deed should be recognized,&#8221; Police Commissioner William Evans said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>MacCausland said even if he knew he wasn\u2019t going to get any kind of reward, he still would have returned the large sum of cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was the right thing to do. A lot of people said, \u2018You should have kept it,\u2019 but I couldn\u2019t do that,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Larry Meister, the president of Independent Taxi Operator\u2019s Association, and a longtime friend of MacCausland, said that\u2019s just the kind of person he was.<\/p>\n<p>He said the cabbie, who has been working as a taxi driver for about 50 years in Boston, was a \u201cvery honest, good guy\u201d the company could be proud of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelieve me, he could use the money, he\u2019s not a very rich man,\u201d Meister said.<\/p>\n<p>The money\u2019s owner told the Boston Globe he wasn\u2019t worried \u201cfor a minute\u201d when he realized he lost his backpack.<br \/>\nFrom the ride with MacCausland, he knew the driver was honest and would return it, the man told the newspaper, on the condition of anonymity.<br \/>\n&#8211;<br \/>\nBy: nydailynews<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Boston taxi cab driver is disappointed he only received a $100 reward after returning $187,000 cash lost in his car. \u201cI thought maybe he would give $500 or $1,000, maybe one of those bundles,\u201d Raymond (Buzzy) MacCausland, the lucky cabbie who found the fortune told the Daily News.
