{"id":227630,"date":"2016-07-03T16:00:10","date_gmt":"2016-07-03T16:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=227630"},"modified":"2016-07-03T16:00:10","modified_gmt":"2016-07-03T16:00:10","slug":"ug-scraps-killer-utility-bills-after-students-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=227630","title":{"rendered":"UG scraps &#8216;killer&#8217; utility bills after students&#8217; protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students of the University of Ghana will now heave a sigh of relief following a decision by authorities of the school to scrap the payment of utility bills to settle it&#8217;s arrears.<\/p>\n<p>The decision will be effective from next academic year.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;1VWI8LEPmHvGbS4c1pyOYlusPP3hNcxC&#8221;]School authorities had earlier<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/06\/28\/ug-src-calls-on-govt-to-stop-killer-utility-charges\/\"> proposed <\/a><\/strong><\/span>GHC 2,326 cedis and GHC 922 for residential and non residential students respectively.<\/p>\n<p>But a statement signed by the President of the SRC, Esinam Afi Seade, said the proposed charges had been \u201cnullified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement further explained that, the directive \u201cwas effected by the University&#8217;s management at the University&#8217;s Council meeting on the 30th of June, 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the light of this, students shall only pay \u00a0their respective residential and academic fees from the start of the 2016\/2017 academic year which effectively begins on Wednesday 17th August, 2016.\u00a0Such billings shall be duly communicated later,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur resolve to champion the interests of students remains unaltered, and with all available support, we shall always seek the best pasture for all students,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, government announced a policy to absorb utility bills for tertiary institutions, but some of the institutions still transferred the cost\u00a0to students.<\/p>\n<p>Students of some tertiary institutions said they were still being billed \u00a0despite government\u2019s intervention.<\/p>\n<p>This compelled the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GNUPS),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/06\/20\/govt-must-come-clear-on-absorption-of-utility-bills-gnups\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>to ask government<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>to\u00a0clarify its stance on\u00a0absorbing utility cost for the various tertiary institutions across the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UCC students won\u2019t pay utility bills \u2013 SRC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Students\u2019 Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC),\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/06\/02\/ucc-students-wont-pay-utility-bills-src\/\"><strong>said students<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>will not be bullied by the management of the university into paying utility bills.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the SRC at UCC, Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, stated that the University is \u00a0only trying to pass some of its debts to students as utility bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought and believed that issue had died out until recently when the university management called on us.
