{"id":224979,"date":"2016-06-23T16:25:10","date_gmt":"2016-06-23T16:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=224979"},"modified":"2016-06-23T16:25:10","modified_gmt":"2016-06-23T16:25:10","slug":"german-cinema-complex-gunman-shot-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=224979","title":{"rendered":"German cinema complex gunman shot dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A masked man who reportedly fired shots in a cinema complex in western Germany has been shot dead by police, the state&#8217;s interior minister has said.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Beuth told the state of Hessen&#8217;s parliament that police stormed the Kinopolis complex in Viernheim, near Frankfurt, after shots were reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The police thought that the gunman was holding hostages and because of that he was shot dead,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Beuth said no-one else had been hurt.<\/p>\n<p>However, reports said some people were suffering the effects of tear gas released as police stormed the complex.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/8A77\/production\/_90074453_ec4881bb-9827-4067-a6d0-4d10367555cc.jpg\" alt=\"Heavily armed police outside a movie theatre complex where an armed man has reportedly opened fire on June 23, 2016 in Viernheim, Germany\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Heavily armed police surrounded the complex after the incident began on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper said it was unclear if there was a political or ideological motive, or if it was an attempted robbery.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Beuth also said: &#8220;The police had an emergency call at 2:45pm [12:45 GMT]. The caller said there was a masked man&#8230; armed with a long gun. It is unclear whether it was a real gun.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The caller heard four shots and said that the masked man appeared a little mentally unstable.
